Betty Jean Chandler Christensen, age 89, "The Piecemaker," passed away on February 13, 2013. Jean was born on March 26, 1923, in North Ogden, Utah. She was the seventh of eight children born to Calvin Harris Chandler and Della Luella Chandler. Her family resided in North Ogden. She attended Weber High School in Ogden, and Weber College until transferring to Utah State University. She was a member of Chi Omega sorority and graduated with a bachelor's degree in Clothing & Textiles in 1946. In September of 1946, she married W. Boyd Christensen in the Salt Lake Temple.Love of family was most import to Jean and she dedicated her life to other's happiness and well being. She influenced and cared about everyone unconditionally. Her talents and leadership were varied. Jean taught classes in Interior Design and Tailoring in California and Illinois where the family resided. She co-founded a Volunteer Pool in Northbrook, Illinois, and Logan, Utah, for citizens to contribute time and talents at their local schools. She chaired the Utah State University's Festival of the American West Quilt Show. She founded the Utah Quilt Guild in 1977 and served as the first president. She loved quilting with all her heart and was the first chairman of the LDS Hospital Quilt Show and Auction. Jean was involved with inter-faith organizations, including Hands Across the Valley and the Logan Alliance for the Varied Arts. Jean served willingly in her LDS Church callings including as Primary President and Relief Society President. She served faithfully by the side of her husband as they presided over the New York, New York, Mission from 1983 to 1986. Upon returning from their mission they were called by the First Presidency to serve as Directors of Church Hosting. Most important to Jean were her 19 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. She knew "families are forever". Jean is survived by her husband, Boyd, and children Jeffery (Eve) Christensen, Callie (Kirk) Godfrey, Peter (Toby) Christensen, Janet (Todd) Calvert. Also survived by her sister Shirley (Robert) Welch, and sister-in-law Adele Chandler. Preceded in death by parents and brothers and sisters. A viewing will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, at Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary, 2350 E. 1300 South, Salt Lake City. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m Monday, Feb. 18, at the LDS Chapel at 2795 Crestview Drive, Salt Lake City. Friends may call prior to the funeral from 9 to 9:45 a.m.
