A wonderful and beautiful lady, Mrs. Betty Lou Shackleford Lacoste, 82, passed away on Friday, June 30, 2017, at her residence.A Celebration of her life will be held on Thursday, July 6, 2017 at 12 noon at First Christian Church of Farmville with the Rev. Kevin Deibert officiating. There will be a private burial the morning of the service.Betty Lou was a native and lifelong resident of Greenville. Mrs. Lacoste was born on Nov. 16, 1934, to Andrew and Louallie Carraway Shackleford. For a short period, her family lived in Robersonville where, at the age of 8, she was selected as majorette and mascot for the Robersonville High School Band.Betty Lou graduated from Greenville High School. She loved typing and decided to begin her career immediately after graduation as the legal secretary for James, Speight, Watson and Brewer Law Firm. She worked there for 29 years and then moved with Colombo & Kitchin when the firm was established. Walt Kitchin spoke very highly of Betty Lou, often sharing that she was very instrumental in helping set up their new practice.In her retirement, she was very active with Greenville Service League and volunteered at Pitt County Memorial Hospital (Vidant) and McConnell-Raab . She was a member of First Christian Church of Farmville, where she served on the Worship Committee. She was a former member of Hooker Memorial Christian Church in Greenville and served as a deacon.Betty Lou will be fondly remembered for her positive outlook, never complaining and in great spirit as she fought a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer for many months. She never met a stranger and always had many good friends to enjoy. Her funny personality and quick wit would always keep her friends entertained.Betty Lou will surely be missed by friends and family that loved her especially her brother, Bob.In addition to her parents, Mrs. Lacoste was preceded in death by her husband, Emile Joseph Lacoste in 1999. They were married in 1987 and shared a lifetime of happiness playing golf, traveling and going to the beach and Lake Gaston.She is survived by: brother, Robert S. "Bob" Shackleford and wife, Sandra; nieces, Deborah S. Martin and husband, Marcus and Kimberly Ann Shackleford, all of Raleigh; great nephews, Zack Martin, Lucas Martin and Kanaan Bunn; step-daughter, Andrea Lacoste Stephens and husband, Doug, and grandchildren, Marguerite Joy and Madelynn Mae, all of Roanoke, Va.; aunt, Sally Glisson, of Stokes, N.C.; uncle, Dave Carraway, of Abingdon, Va.All in attendance are invited to join the family for a luncheon following the service at the church.The family would like to thank close friends and family for their loving support and especially her dear and devoted friend, Vickie Edwards, who not only has been a friend, but has been there for her through many years and during the final stages of her life.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: East Carolina Village and Farm Museum, 4570 County Home Road, Winterville, NC 28590 or First Christian Church of Farmville, 3776 S.
