Betty Louise Waller SteffensVero Beach, FLBetty Louise Waller Steffens of Salisbury, MD and Vero Beach, Florida, died early on December 23, 2016 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake.Lou was born on March 11, 1921 in Salisbury, MD to Senator Robert Fulton Waller and Miriam Ruth Evans. Lou attended Mrs. Herold's School where, she said, she learned everything that would be important to her in life including bridge and excepting geography. She continued her education in Salisbury and went to Mary Lyons College, a division of Swarthmore, at age 16. While there she met Roger K. Steffens who was attending the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Following graduation they married, and lived briefly in New York and Chicago before moving to Salisbury to raise their family.Lou loved her life in Salisbury. While her children were young, she was very involved with her community. At St. Peters Church she oversaw the Alter Guild, the Lenten lunches, the Christmas bazaar and the Talent Shop. At the hospital, she ran the Junior Board Shop and did their buying. Lou was also very active with the Community Players, possessing a wonderful singing voice.Music was a commonality between Lou and Roger-she came to share his love of Barbershop Quartet Singing, traveling the country and the world with him as he judged stage presence. Lou also took on his passion for golf, learning to play, competing on the county club's golf team and helping to run their annual Pepsi-Cola Tournament.In the early 1970's, Lou and Rog decided to spend the winters in Florida. Their choice was the John's Island Club in Vero Beach, FL. There she established the Club's Women's Golf Committee, supported the local theatre and involved herself in many charitable groups, especially if it focused on "four feet and fur".Lou and Roger also continued to travel, this time with People to People, an ambassadorial international golf organization.Lou led a very full life, filled with wonderful friends from various generations and walks of life. She was a very caring person, a great secret keeper, a savvy advisor, a terrific public speaker and always anyone's best friend.She is survived by her son, Roger K. Steffens, Jr. of the Hagerstown area; her daughter, Pamela Waller Steffens Sailer (John, Jr.) of Wilmington, DE; her grandson, John Sailer, III (Nicole) of West Chester, PA; and her two great-grandchildren, Jack Bennett Sailer and Loretta Lou Sailer.Services will be held at a later time.Arrangements are in the care of Holloway Funeral Home, P.A., 501 Snow Hill Road, Salisbury, MD 21804.
