Betty Lou Gregory Tarr passed away gracefully on June 1, 2017 at her home at Haciendas at Grace Village in Las Cruces. She was lovingly attended in her last days by her caregivers there and by her family; her husband, Ben, her daughters, Carra Otto and Linda Tarr, and her grandchildren, Jared Tarr and Sarah Ennes. Betty's family also includes Foncy Prescott, Anne Ashby, her sister, her many nieces and nephews, and her dear friends David and Ruthie Chavez and Helga Cannon.Betty was born on her parents' farm near Broken Bow, OK on November 28, 1931, the eighth of nine children. Her love for her home place and family was one of the abiding themes of her life. Her marriage to Ben in 1950 began a loving and contented life together, and they shared a devotion to family. Betty and Ben led the effort in 1972 to build a home for her mother and youngest brother.Betty attended college at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Because of her intelligence and conscientious nature, Betty was a valued employee at several doctor's offices in McAlester, OK, Ventura, CA, and Las Cruces, NM. She also worked as a telephone operator, a clerk at White Sands Missile Range, and as a substitute teacher in Las Cruces. The job she loved most was as the librarian at Valley View Elementary School, which she held for 18 years. She took great joy in reading to children and teaching them how to use the library and make books their lifelong tools and friends.The Church of Christ was central to Betty's life and she strove always to be a faithful and obedient Christian.Betty will be missed and remembered by many for her wonderful sense of humor and generous laughter. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. She was also a great cook and loved to trade recipes and feed people. Her stories reflected a phenomenal memory for detail and her forthright personality and sense of fun made her delightful company and a trusted friend.A memorial service will be held at La Paz - Graham Funeral Home in Las Cruces on Friday, July 14th, at 1:30 P.M.Her husband, Ben, will continue living at Haciendas at Grace Village in Las Cruces.In lieu of flowers, a fund for education for her caregivers and their families has been established in her name.
