Bill Ellington, 68Yorktown - Bill Ellington passed away peacefully at home on April 14, 2017 after a brief but courageous battle with brain cancer.He was born on September 9, 1948 in Muncie, the son of Wesley and Lillian Irene (Case) Ellington. Bill enlisted in the US Army and served as a Military Police Officer at WestPoint Academy and at Fort Richardson in Fairbanks, Alaska.After being honorably discharged and returning to the lower 48 in 1972, he achieved his dream job of being a police officer and served for 31 years before retiring from Ball State University in 2009. During his police career, he served on both the horse patrol and the bike patrol - graduating from bicycle police training school where he had to ride down the steps of the football stadium at Notre Dame to graduate. Early in his police career, he served as a field training officer for interns and new officers and inspired many current police careers. He was member of Glad Tiding Church.Bill married Kim Gorden in 1994 and over the next 22 years they hiked and camped almost every national park in the country. His most memorable trips included watching whales in Maine, tall ships in Nova Scotia, pub crawls in Ireland, and hiking Half Dome, the Grand Canyon, Arches, and Angel's Landing. His retirement job was a courtesy shuttle driver for Toyota - perfect for a man who knew no strangers and his passengers and co-workers were a captive audience for his many stories of their travels around the country. His passion was also for golf. Until cancer, he played in at least one or two leagues every year, but he truly enjoyed weekly golf games with his brother.He is survived by his wife and best friend, Kimberly J. Ellington, his daughters Lori Christine Ellington and Noel Christine Walburn (husband Brent), his grandson Alexander Nicholas Walburn, one brother Thomas Wesley Ellington (Carol), and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, in-laws, cousins, and many friends.Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his infant daughter Sarah Elizabeth.Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at Glad Tidings Church, 3001 Burlington, Muncie with Pastor Kevin Holt officiating. Full military honors will follow services conducted by the Veterans of Delaware County.Friends may call at Glad Tidings Church, 3001 Burlington, Muncie from 12:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19, 2017.In lieu of flowers you may make a donation in Bill's name to Premier Hospice, 11550 N.
