Bill Legg Obituary

Jan 20, 1956 - Sep 24, 2017

This obituary is administered by:
Bill Legg Bill Legg was born on January 19, 1956 in Denver, Colorado, to Adeline and Billie Legg. Bill passed away suddenly at his home on September 24, 2017. He grew up in Manitou Springs, Colorado, and attended Colorado State University where he obtained a degree in Civil Engineering. Upon graduating in 1982, Bill accepted a position with the Washington State Department of Transportation where he remained until his retirement in January 2017. He was the state ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) operations engineer at the time of his retirement. Bill's expertise and reputation in the ITS field gained him national recognition. He served on numerous national boards and committees, including the Transportation Research Board and ITS American. Upon his retirement from the WSDOT, Bill accepted a position in the Seattle office of WSP, a global engineering firm, as Senior ITS Operations Specialist where he remained until his death. In April 1983, he married the love of his life, Shirley Kennedy, who survives him. A bonus of the marriage was a young step-daughter, Stacy Slaton (Lousteau), who he never considered anything less than his own daughter, refusing to use the word "step." She brought much joy into his life and he showered her with unconditional love. Nothing gave him more delight and pride than watching his grandchildren grow, and he spoiled and adored them. Ashley, Lindsey, and Ian will miss out on so much that was yet to be learned from "Grandbill." Their hearts are broken. Bill's passion in life was his photography. In his spare time, you would find him with camera bag slung over his shoulder, wandering and exploring to find just the right photo to add to his ever-growing portfolio. He loved sharing his photos with family, friends, and anyone who showed an interest. He used his office walls as a rotating gallery and garnered quite a following among co-workers. Bill was a graduate of the New York Institute of Photography and a member of the Olympia Camera Club. In addition to photography, Bill had deep love and respect for the wilderness, and being on any mountain brought him peace and tranquility. He had hiked every accessible trail in Rocky Mountain National Park and probably as many on Mt. Rainier and the Cascades. Whistler, B.C. captured Bill's heart on the very first visit, and he and Shirley spent time every summer in Whistler hiking, biking, and relaxing for 26 years. In addition to his wife, daughter and grandchildren, Bill is survived by his brothers, Brian Legg and Keith Legg, niece, Kate Legg, and nephew, Alex Legg, all of Colorado; sisters-in-law, Sharon Kennedy of Olympia, Pat Galyardt (Don) of Colorado, Betty Petrie (Jim) of Montana; and his beloved cat buddy, Gypsy. He leaves behind many friends and colleagues who will feel the emptiness of his passing. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, October 7, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at The United Churches of Olympia, 110 11th Avenue SE, Olympia WA. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating online to the Walter Scott Jr. College of Engineering Dean's Innovation Fund at Colorado State University, or The Homeward Pet Adoption Center in Woodinville, WA.
