STATE ROAD — Billy Baker Smith passed away on March 9, 2017, just four weeks after the passing of his dear wife, Vilena. He was born on Aug. 25, 1932, to the late Ernest and Thelma Smith. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served from January 1954 through January 1956. Most of his service time was spent serving in France. Billy and Vilena made their home of 64 years in the Zephyr/Mountain Park community, where they farmed growing crops, raising broiler chickens and owning a Grade A dairy. In 1982, they sold most of the farm animals and equipment and began focusing on other careers. Billy became a corrections officer with the State Department and worked there until his retirement in 1994. After retirement, he enjoyed community and church activities as well as raising and working with horses. Billy and Vilena were known throughout the community as hard workers and people that others could always count on in times of need. Billy's survivors are his daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Randy Bowers; son, Bruce and special friend, Geralline Quesinberry; special adoptive son, Jimmy and Sue Gammons. Other survivors include his grandchildren, Alan and Olivia Bowers and Lewis Smith; sister-in-law, Helen White; nieces, Lora Rosamond, Ruth Kidd and Betty Foster; and nephew, David White; as well as several cousins. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 11, 2017, at 3 p.m. at Gum Orchard Baptist Church with visitation prior to the service from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at the church.
