Billy Wayne Mims (Retired Abilene Fireman)Abilene, TXBilly Wayne Mims (Retired Abilene Fireman), 87, passed away on Saturday, October 29, 2016 in Abilene. Visitation with family and friends will be 10:00 AM, Tuesday, November 1, 2016 at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 Hwy 277 South, with the funeral service beginning one hour later at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, November 1, 2016 with Chris Hale officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park Cemetery. Billy was born on April 7, 1929 in Post Oak, TX to Terry Clyde Mims and Susan Elizabeth Webb. He graduated from Anson High School and Draughon's business college and also completing extension courses at Cisco Junior College and Texas A&M (Firefighting Branch). Billy married Dorothye Rainwater on November 20, 1954 in Anson, TX. He began his career as a fireman for the Abilene Fire Department. He had been a fireman for only a few months when he joined the U.S. Navy and served from 1950-1954 during the Korean Conflict. After discharge he came back to the Abilene Fire Department in 1954 and was promoted to Lieutenant in 1976. Billy retired after 30 years of service with the department and moved from Abilene to Eastland in 1986. He was a member of Daugherty Street Church of Christ in Eastland.Preceding him in death were his parents; and one brother, Howard Mims. Survivors include his wife of almost 62 years, Dorothye Mims; two sons, Michael Wayne "Mike" Mims and wife Charlotte of Sunnyvale, TX, and Mark Mims and wife, Markay of Dallas, five grandchildren, Aaron Mims and wife, Jennifer, Charles Mims and wife, Lauren, Lauren Gay Mims, Jason Mims and wife, Lauren, Chris Mims and wife, Aarica, and Meaghan Matthews and husband, Fred; eight great-granddaughters, Alexis, Jocelyn, Emma, Phebe, Aubrey, Reagan, Ashelynn and Sloane; two great-grandsons on the way; and a sister, Sue Hill and husband, Wallace of Las Cruces, NM.
