A celebration of life will be held at 2:00PM Tuesday, January 31, 2017, in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home Sterlington Rd. Monroe with Rev. R.C. Smith, Jr. and Rev. James Doughty officiating. Interment will follow in Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Smith was born on October 14, 1930, in Lake Providence, LA. Her parents were W. B. and Mollie Copeland Walters. At age 50, she enrolled at Northeast Louisiana University (now ULM) where she earned a degree in social work and graduating Magna Cum Laude and was initiated into Phi Kappa Phi. Mrs. Smith was a Christian, baptized in Calvary Baptist Church at the age of 13. In 1946 Bobbie married James T. Smith of Monroe, a marriage that lasted 66 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, daughter, Linda Johnson, her parents, four brothers, four sisters, and a niece. In 1981, Mrs. Smith joined the Ouachita Parish Women's Republican Club, serving as board member, as Secretary and as First Vice President. A hi-light of her years with Republican Women came in 2007 when Bobbie was one of four Louisiana women invited to the White House for a luncheon with First Lady Laura Bush. Mrs. Smith was an active member of First Baptist Church, Monroe, LA. She taught 4th graders in Sunday School for 10 years, was a member of the building committee when the Children's Education Building was constructed and was involved in the missions organizations of the church. At the time of her death, she was a much loved member of the Friendship Sunday School Class. In 1975, the Smiths began volunteering with Southern Baptists' Volunteer Christian Builders. Traveling to 15 states over 31 years, and driving over 100,000 miles, they helped build 125 churches, many of these in areas that never had a Baptist church. Mrs. Smith is survived by three nieces, Michelle Kissel and Eleanor Lincoln of New Windsor, New York ; and Marcie Shelton of Flint TX; a special nephew, Rev. R. C. Smith, Jr. of West Monroe, LA; and son-in-law, Randy Johnson of Shreveport, LA. Visitation will be Tuesday from 12:00PM until service time at Mulhearn Funeral Home.
