Brian Thomas Long Obituary

Jul 28, 1972 - Oct 27, 2017

This obituary is administered by:
Mr. Brian Thomas Long, 45, of Thurmont, MD passed away on Friday, October 27, 2017 at his home with his wife, Jean Long, by his side.

Born on July 28, 1972 he was the son of Edith L Martin-Long of Emmitsburg, MD and Charles L Long & Diane Long of Gettysburg, PA.

He graduated from Catoctin High School in 1990 and loved the friendships that he formed and maintained over the years.

He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, from 1993 – 1997, stationed primarily in Altus, Oklahoma, where he also served his community through his coaching skills and united a girls soccer league.

He enjoyed his employment as manager of Sports Authority in Frederick, MD and valued the customers and staff.

His love of camping began from his childhood that was reborn with his wife, Wolfpack, and family. Every free moment was spent with his family.

He was a member of the Incarnation Church of Christ in Emmitsburg, MD where he bonded with a church family of over 35 years.

His passion for soccer was unparalleled to any other. From starting toe taps with his uncle Jim in the front yard to following instruction from his coach and respected friend, George Kuhn, he continued his love of the game through his entire life. He valued his time on the field with his classmates & forever pronounced his claim to fame when his team clinched the Regional II Champs in 1989. He continued to play soccer well beyond his high school years and met his wife, Jean, on the field of his indoor soccer league. When his family grew, he embraced the love of coaching youth sports from LUYAA to CYASC; his gratification came from the happiness that expelled from each child. His commitment to youth sports was incredible. His determination to grow the soccer program in his local community became an addiction and he found himself serving as CYASC president in addition to coaching multiple teams within the league. Brian coached many children over the years, but the highlight of his coaching career was coaching his own children: Josh, Jake, Joey and Maggie. His legacy will live on through each child he taught and each family he touched.

In addition to his wife, Jean, he is survived by his children, daughters, Anna Margaret "Maggie" Long, Jordan and Taylor Long, his step-sons, Jonathan, Joshua, Jacob and Joseph Matthews. He is also survived by his sister, Angie Forrest, of Thurmont, MD; step-sister, Karen Fouchie, of Gettysburg, PA; niece McKenzi Forrest, of Thurmont, MD; nephew Brady Fouchie, of Gettysburg, PA; God-daughter & niece, Victoria Long, of Louisville, KY; uncle Jay Allen, of Emmitsburg, MD; uncle James Martin, of Hagerstown, MD; uncle John Martin and wife Imogene, of Frederick, MD; aunt Loretta Bowers , of Taneytown, MD; aunt Theresa Meadows and husband Eddie of Kernersville, NC; uncle Sonny Long and wife Vonnie, of Union Bridge, MD; and numerous cousins. He will be missed by his mother-in-law, Jane Browning, of Mt Airy, MD; sister-in-law, Mary Christiansen and husband Bob, of Mt Airy, MD; sister-in-law, Debbie Phelps and husband Don Don, of Mt Airy, MD; sister-in-law, Patti Browning, of Mt Airy, MD.

Preceding him is his maternal grandparents, George & Anna Margaret Martin and his paternal grandparents, Leonard & Ethel Long, uncle Larry Bowers, aunt Susan Martin-Allen, and nephew T.J. Burdette.

The family will receive friends and family from 2-4pm and 6-9pm on Sunday, November 1, 2017 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 E Main Street, Thurmont, MD and funeral services at 11am on Monday, November 2, 2017 at Incarnation United Church of Christ, 124 W Main Street, Emmitsburg.

In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for Anna Margaret "Maggie" Long at Damascus Community Bank; 26500 Ridge Rd., P.O. Box 1, Damascus, M.D. 20872, made payable to Brian T Long Memorial Fund.
