Long-time Juneau resident, Buel M. Hixson Jr. passed away on August 18, 2014 at home following a short battle with cancer. Buel was born on February 5, 1928 in Denver, Colorado to Buel and Mary Hixson. Buel was raised in Powell, Wyoming and graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1952.Buel began his career of public service with the United States Army working to assist in rebuilding Japan after World War II. After receiving his honorable discharge, he continued his public service with the Alaska Road Commission in 1953 and worked for the next 30 years for the state and federal governments creating and repairing the infrastructure of Alaska. Buel began his private career as an inspector for Wilson Engineers at the age of 65. The last ten years of his career were considered by Buel as being some of the most enjoyable years. Buel met the love of his life in 1958 in Juneau, Alaska, Nancy Berggren and were married December 31, 1958. His only regret at the end of his abundant life was leaving Nancy.Buel is survived by his wife, Nancy and his three children and their spouses: Becky and (Dan) Nelson, Mark and (Carolyn Guptill Johnson) Hixson, and Wayne and (Beth) Hixson. Five grandchildren; Katrina and (Zachary) McGee, Nathaniel and (Jennifer) Abbott, Jacob and (Kristina) Abbott, Brittany and (John) Kuterbach, and Michael Sarkesian. Seven great grandchildren, Adrianna Eyler, Kaitlyn and Evan McGee, Caleb, Emily and Erik Abbott, and Parker Abbott. A memorial service will be held Sunday, August 24, 2014 at 3:00 at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church 4212 Mendenhall Loop Road. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Shepherd of the Valley, summer lunch program.
