Burnet Rhett Maybank, Jr. Charleston - Burnet Maybank, Jr., age 92, passed away in Charleston, SC on October 25, 2016. He was the son of Burnet Rhett Maybank, a past mayor of Charleston, SC, Governor of South Carolina, and United States Senator and Elizabeth Myers Maybank. He was married to his beloved wife Marion Mitchell for 58 years before her passing on December 2, 2007. Mr. Maybank was born on May 2, 1924 in Charleston, SC. He was educated at Charleston and Episcopal High. Mr. Maybank later attended the Citadel from 1941 to 1942. He enlisted at the age of 19 in 1942 for pilot training in the Army Air Corps at the beginning of his sophomore year. By late 1943 he was flying four engine B-17s loaded with ten thousand pounds of bombs on bombing missions, including "seven of the first eight or nine over Berlin, which was pretty tough because we were in danger of running out of fuel before we got back to England." He served in the European theatre of WWII from 1942 to 1945 with the 8th Air Force, 394 Heavy Bombardment Group, participating in valuable campaigns such as D-Day. For his services, he was awarded the E.T.O. Ribbon, Air Medal, and the Distinguished Flying Cross. After WWII, he married Marion Mitchell of Charleston in 1949, and he attended USC and USC Law School, Graduating in 1950. While there he received a B.S., L.L.B. and J.D. After 1950, Mr. Maybank practiced law and was elected to the SC General Assembly in 1952 serving through 1958. In 1954, Mr. Maybank had a daughter named Marion, and in 1955, a Son named Burnet. In 1958, he was elected to the Lieutenant Governorship, and served there until 1962. He was also a candidate for governor in 1962. Mr. Maybank served on the Charleston County Council for two terms. Mr. Maybank served on many boards. He was a former Board member and President of the South Carolina Muscular Dystrophy Association, Cerebral Palsy Association of SC and SC Mental Health Association. He was also on the Board of Miss Masons School, SC Shrimpers Association, National Audubon Society-Southeastern Region, and the Edisto Island Museum. Mr. Maybank was also a member of the St. Andrews Society, Hibernian Society and the South Carolina Historical Society. Mr. Maybank was a member of the Episcopalian Churches of St. Michaels of Charleston, and Trinity Episcopal of Edisto Island. He loved the outdoors, and enjoyed spending time on his plantation on Edisto Island and mountain house in Flat Rock, NC. He loved playing tennis and was President and member of the Charleston Tennis Association and was a co-owner for of the Maybank tennis Center on James Island. Mr. Maybank also enjoyed flying and was a member of the US Pilots Association. Surviving are his children, Burnet Maybank III of Charleston and Marion Maybank of Brooklyn NY; grandchildren, William Maybank, Elizabeth Maybank, Burnet Maybank IV (Rhett), and Thomas Maybank; great-grandchild, James Youngblood; and sister Elizabeth Wright (Libby). The relatives and friends of Burnet R. Maybank, Jr. are invited to attend his Funeral Service at 11:00 AM Saturday, October 29, 2016, at Trinity Episcopal Church, Edisto Island. Interment in the Churchyard will be Private. The family will receive friends at the Carolina Yacht Club on Friday evening between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM.
