Byron Franklin Miller, a very loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away on Nov. 11, 2016, in Anchorage, Alaska, at age 85, of age-related issues.Dr. Miller was born on Aug. 20, 1931, to Harvey Willis and Iva Roxie Miller in Robinson, Brown County, Kansas. He graduated as salutatorian of his high school class, which allowed him to earn a scholarship at Kansas State University. He loved education and earned his Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate degrees from KSU. Dr. Miller later worked as a Professor in the Animal Science Dept. at Colorado State University, specializing in Avian (Poultry) Science.During his time at CSU he developed poultry products, including ground turkey and turkey ham. His lifelong love of learning was shared with his children.While attending Kansas State University he met Joan "Jodi" Ruth Kuhn at a Poultry Science Club meeting, which began an eternal relationship. They later married on July 22, 1952, at Green Mountain Falls, Colo.Byron was commissioned as a U.S. Army officer after having been in the ROTC program in college. He was later stationed at army bases in New Jersey, Texas andArizona.After his retirement from CSU, Byron and Jodi served a mission together in Ruidoso, N.M., for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They later followed their daughter's family up the Alaska Highway in 1993, and decided to make Anchorage their new home. Byron was very active in church, serving in many capacities including that as Branch President of the Alaska Bush Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.Byron and Jodi celebrated 52 years of marriage just prior to her passing in 2004. In 2005, Byron married Carol Richardson and spent time in her hometown of Yuba City, Calif., where he especially enjoyed gardening and raising chickens.Dr. Miller is survived by his wife, Carol; five children; and five stepchildren. His children are: Jerald (Norma) Miller, Gayla (Rob) Stephens, Beuna Tomalino, Audrey (Bob) Kirn and Darin (Pam) Miller. He has 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, with one more on the way.Byron was preceded in death by his first wife, Joan; and three grandchildren.Funeral services will be held in Anchorage at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Brayton Chapel, 13161 Brayton Drive, at 2 p.m., on Friday, Dec. 2, 2016.Arrangements by Anchorage Funeral Home.
