C. Michael Vanover, 68, of Logan, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010, at McKay Dee Hospital after a month long battle to survive a sudden heart problem. At the time of death he was surrounded by his loving family. Mike was born on Dec. 26, 1941, in Ellettsville, Ind., to Lily Speas Vanover and Glen Vanover. His father was killed in France in the line of duty during World War II in 1944. He grew up in Phoenix, Ariz., where he attended Central High School and Arizona State University. He played football at ASU before serving an LDS mission in New York. He met the love of his life, Mary Ann Myers, and they were married in the Arizona LDS Temple on March 25, 1966. He owned his own business in Phoenix until 1980, when they moved their family to Cache Valley, where he worked for Cache Valley Cheese and later Schreiber of Smithfield. Mike is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ann of Logan, and his four wonderful children: Renee' Gunnell (Chad) of Logan; Chuck Vanover (Melissa) of Smithfield; Rebecca Landa (Victor) of Millville; and Andrew Vanover of Logan. He had a special love for his nine grandchildren: Carl Landa, Brittny Gunnell, Michael Vanover, Angela Landa, Madison Vanover, Anthony Landa, Lindsey Vanover, Jacob Landa, and Josh Gunnell. Mike is also survived by his two sisters, Glenda Bond and Colleen Hunt (Lee) of Phoenix, Ariz. Mike was preceded in death by his parents, his stepfather William Hughes, and his brother-in-law Frank Bond. Mike was extremely patriotic and loved America. Mike always enjoyed being involved in politics, and he was always ready for a good debate. In 2002 he had the opportunity to carry the Olympic torch during the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. Mike loved hiking in the hills of Cache Valley, and the area surrounding Yellowstone. Mike hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon many times as a Scout leader. He enjoyed traveling and loved to go to Disneyland with his grandchildren. Mike was well known for his sense of humor, he always lightened every ones day. He was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in which he served in many callings, including Scouts, early morning seminary teacher, Young Mens, Sunday school, and most recently, as activities leader. Mike most often served as a teacher bringing humor, laughter, and spirituality to his lessons. For family and friends a viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010, at Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 E. Center St., Logan, and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. before the funeral services at the church. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 22, 2010, at the 3 Point Ave. Stake Center in Logan (940 Three Point Avenue). Interment will be held at the Logan Cemetery.
