Carl Eugene "Gene" MenhornZANESVILLE: Carl Eugene "Gene" Menhorn, 91, of Zanesville died at 8:30pm Monday, August 03, 2015 at the Oaks at Bethesda.He was born on March 13, 1924 in Zanesville the son of William L. and Marie L. Richter Menhorn. He was a graduate of Lash High School in 1942. He retired as an industrial Engineer in 1984 from Western Electric (AT&T) in Columbus. He worked at Roseville Pottery and Line Material. A lifelong member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, a member of the
VFW Post 1058, American Legion Post 29, ZHS Tip Off club. He was a
WWII
Army Veteran having served in the United States Army Signal Corp from 1943 to 1946 in Hawaii and then was transferred to Kwajalein Island. He was injured in combat and received many medals. In high school, he played basketball with his friend Fred Taylor, former coach at Ohio State. He was an avid baseball and fast pitch player. He played for the Chandlersville Reds Semi Pro team in 1941-1942 and was on the Eastern Ohio All Star team as a shortstop. He had a contract to try out for the Class C Chicago Cubs professional team as a shortstop but was drafted into the Army. After the Army, he started playing fast pitch. He played for Roseville Pottery, Line Material and the well-known Maysville Super Market Teams where he was player & manager. He was inducted into the Fast Pitch Hall of Fame. He also played on many basketball teams. He also enjoyed golf & was on many bowling teams. He was a dedicated Blue Devil Basketball and Football fan and enjoyed Ohio State sports. Some of his greatest pleasures was watching all sports & westerns on TV, and playing cards. He was very proud of his three daughters, grandchildren & great grandchildren. He was a loving husband, dad, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle and friend to many. He is survived by his wife, Edna R. (Lee) McFarland Menhorn whom he married November 7, 1998; three daughters, Linda (Tim) Starrett of Zanesville, Vicki Foltz of Pataskala and Cathy (Ray) Ogden of Whitehall; grandchildren, Kelli Williams, Kevin (Brandi Seckman) Starrett, Chad (Kelly) Foltz, Brad (Stephanie) Foltz, Troy Brobst, Aubry (Jacob) Jones, Brandon (Kristina) Ogden, Michelle (Shane) Foster, Elizabeth (Wayne) Bennett, Jessica (Kirk) White and Matthew (Christa) McFarland; great grandchildren, Kiara Williams, Kiah Williams, Ethan Starrett, Chance Starrett, Hannah Castaneda, Landen Castaneda, Marcus Foltz, Madisyn Foltz, Caden Foltz, Blayke Foltz, Alex Foster, Abby Jones, Emmy Jones, Elsa Ogden, Nolan Ogden, Andrew Bennett, Elise Bennett and Henry White; mother-in-law, Dorothy Schenk of Zanesville; sister-in-law, Sheila Morgan of Texas; many nieces, nephews and friends including his special friend, Elden Hudson and his Ohio State/Michigan buddies. Preceded in death in addition to his parents, by his loving wife of 50 years, June Schenk Menhorn whom he married in June 22, 1946 and who died December 13, 1996; his brothers, Clayton, Vernon, and Bill; his sisters, Mabel Baldwin, Mildred Starkey, and Lucille Menhorn; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; a granddaughter, Debra Lee Starrett; his father-in-law, Earl Schenk; son-in-law, Mike McGowan; and a dear friend, Chuck Reynolds. Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8pm Thursday, August 6 at the Bryan & Hardwick Funeral Home, 2318 Maple Ave., Zanesville Ohio. Funeral service will be held 11 am Friday, August 7 with one hour visitation prior to service at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church with Rev. Larry Kudart officiating. Burial with Military Honors will conclude at the Zanesville Memorial Park Cemetery.The family would like to thank the staff at the Oaks at Bethesda who were very caring people where he made many new friends.
