Smith, Carlton R.Carlton R. Smith of Trumansburg passed away at Cayuga Medical Center with family by his side on Monday, February 6, 2017 at the age of 90. Carlton was born on November 28, 1926 in Ithaca, a son of the late Minor and Lucelia (Willis) Smith. A lifelong Trumansburg resident, he graduated from Trumansburg High School. Several years later, Carlton's mother married Ellsworth Weatherby, introducing him to several stepsiblings, Alan (Barb) Weatherby, Richard (Joanna) Weatherby, Ann Ida (Bob) Raymond, and Diane (Roger) Sherman. Out of high school, Carlton became a plumbing apprentice with Jamison McKinney and then did residential construction, including his own house, with his uncle Francis Willis. Carlton began his long term career for Haverstick Company and retired in 1991 after 34 years of service as a purchasing agent and office manager. He was a wonderful father taking part in his kids school and extracurricular activities. He was a life member of the Ithaca Radio Control Society and was an avid builder of radio control planes. Carlton enjoyed spending time with children and was a member of the Cornell Retiree Volunteering in Schools Program. He volunteered taking kindergarteners on nature walks and made pine cone birdfeeders with the kids. First Baptist Church in Trumansburg has always been a prominent part of Carlton's life, starting when he was 4. He attended church with his grandfather Charlie Smith and has attended First Baptist ever since. Carlton, along with other church members were instrumental in the construction of the new church located on Seneca Road. He helped with everything from plumbing to wiring and used his personal account for lighting and wiring purchases. In later years, he and his wife saw the need for cool air flow in the sanctuary and donated the funds to purchase ceiling fans. Over the years, Carlton served on the Board of Trustees numerous times.
