Flora, OFM Cap, Rev. Carmel
Rev.Carmel Flora, Capuchin friar and priest, died Thursday, January 19, 2017, at the age of 90.
Fr.Carmel was born on September 19, 1926, in New York, the son of Francesco Flora and Carmela (Verderose) Flora.He was invested with the Capuchin habit in 1945, perpetually professed in 1949,and ordained a priest in 1953. From 1954-1958, Carmel was assigned as a professor at St. Felix Friary in Huntington, Indiana. He was transferred to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1958 where he ministered with the Secular Franciscans and served as local minister at St. Francis Community. He was assigned to Detroit, Michigan in 1964 and ministered with the Secular Franciscans until 1969 when he accepted an invitation to minister in Australia. During his 47 years in the Australian province, Fr. Carmel served as novice director, provincial vicar and provincial minister. He retired in the U.S. in 2012 at St. Fidelis Community in Appleton, Wisconsin.Fr. Carmel is survived by a niece, Janet Owens, of Wellington, Florida, and by his many Capuchin Brothers with whom he lived, prayed and ministered for 72 years.A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, January 28, 2017, at St. Isidore the Farmer Parish-Holy Cross Church, 308 S. County Road W, Mount Calvary, WI 53057. Rev. Gary Devery, Provincial Minister of Australia, will officiate. Fr. Carmel will be laid to rest later this spring in the St. Lawrence Seminary Friary Cemetery in Mount Calvary. All are invited for a luncheon at the St. Lawrence Seminary Community following the mass.Visitation: Family and friends may call at the church in Mount Calvary on Friday, January 27th from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM. A Vigil will be held at 7:00 PM at the church.
