Dr. Carole Mary EberlyDr. Carole Mary Eberly passed away peacefully and unexpectedly February 17 while on vacation in Mexico. Carole was born on December 15, 1943 to Paul W. and Mary C. Walaskay. She grew up in Dearborn, Michigan, Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Mexico City. A graduate of Michigan State University's School of Journalism, Carole began her career as a general assignment reporter at the Charlevoix Courier. She then became news editor for radio station WHMI in Howell before being hired as a state capital correspondent for United Press International, where she covered all branches of government for more than five years. Carole started Eberly Press in 1977 which published books filled with Michigan lore and recipes. In 1979 she launched Michigan Journal, a statewide general interest magazine. In 1983, MSU recruited her to teach in the School of Journalism, where she remained for 13 years. In 1994, she was interim editor of Michigan Medicine magazine (the official journal of the Michigan State Medical Society), and from 1996 to 1999 she was editor of Lansing City Limits magazine. Meanwhile, Carole earned her M.A. and Ph.D. from MSU. In 1995, Central Michigan University's Department of Journalism offered her a teaching position where she received tenure and a promotion. In 2000, Carole served as copy editor at the China Daily in Beijing.Dr. Eberly won a variety of awards and honors, including MSU's College of Communications Arts & Sciences Outstanding Alumni Award in 1981 and the National Federation of Press Women's Communicators of Achievement for 2006, the group's highest honor. She retired from CMU, but not before meeting her beloved husband there, Dr. Charles Ebel, who preceded her in death. In retirement, Carole lived in Elberta and Traverse City to be near her daughter, Jessica (Patrick) Sullivan and her grandson Henry. She spent her retirement years in a close and loving relationship with Jessica and Patrick, and was a devoted grandmother to Henry whom she deeply adored. Carole traveled frequently with family and friends, most recently to the Women's March in Washington D.C.Carole is survived by her daughter, son-in-law, grandson, brother Paul (Jinx Lucas) Walaskay, Jr., sister Marianna (Tim) Erdmann, many nieces and nephews, cousins and other beloved family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Planned Parenthood or the ACLU. A funeral will be held at 11am on May 12th at St. Phillips Episcopal Church in Beulah, MI; at 4pm the same day a reception will be held at the Park Place hotel in Traverse City, MI.
