1990 - 2016Carolyn "Carrie" or "Coco" Hilton Bush died on September 28, 2016 in Queens, New York. Carolyn is survived by her mother Susan Balfe Bush, father James Bush, step-mother Cynthia Bush, sister and brother-in-law Jennifer and Mike Schatz, and many extended family and friends. Carolyn was born on November 19, 1990 in Houston, Texas. She lived her early years in Dallas and St. Petersburg, Florida. She received her high school diploma and Associate's degree from St. Petersburg Collegiate High School in 2009. During this time, she became interested in the political activism and feminist causes that would inform much of her later work. Carolyn began working towards a Bachelor's Degree in 2009 through Bard College's writing program, where her skills flourished. Carolyn moved to New York City in 2012 and became an active member of the writing community there. She worked at McNally Jackson Independent Booksellers in SoHo. There, she befriended many of the poets and bibliophiles with whom she would go on to found Wendy's Subway, a nonprofit reading room, library, and discussion forum for diverse artists and writers. In 2015, Carolyn resumed the pursuit of her degree at the New School. She was part of a pilot independent study program, working with advisors to write a self-guided curriculum in literary theory. Carolyn planned to continue her studies with a Ph.D. in English following the completion of her degree at the New School. Carrie leaves behind a legacy of insight and passion at Wendy's Subway as well as a bright body of poetry and written work. In the weeks before her death, Carolyn was passionately engaged in a group project focused on theories of community in literature and philosophy. The project, titled "How to Live Together," will be continued by her colleagues at Wendy's Subway. Carrie is remembered as a loving daughter, sister, and friend. She nurtured a curiosity in mysticism, astrology, and holistic self-care. A close friend described her as "honest and conscious about her state of being," and many have remembered her as present, curious, thoughtful, witty, fun-loving, and brilliant. A vigil was held at Wendy's Subway on October 3 following her death. A memorial will be held at 3 PM on November 20 in St. Petersburg, Florida at the St. Petersburg Women's Club on Snell Isle. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Carolyn's life and what would have been her 26th birthday. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Wendy's Subway are welcomed (http://gofundme.com/CarolynBush or at http://www.wendyssubway.com/support).
