RACINE - Carolyn J. Hartley, 91, passed away peacefully on August 16, 2013. Carolyn J. Hartley was born on May 25, 1922 in Elkart, Indiana to the late C. Edwin and Maude Belle (née: Noel) Kirkwood. She graduated from Ball State Teacher's College with a degree in Education. Carolyn was united to the love of her life Frederick J. Hartley on October 1, 1943 in Muncie, Indiana. Together they lived in California from 1948 until 1965, when they moved to Racine. Carolyn was deeply devoted to God. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church and of Grace Baptist Church where she loved attending bible study. At Grace Baptist, Carolyn was a deaconess. She was always heavily involved in church and did great missionary and charity work for those who needed it. She volunteered for the Meals on Wheels program, delivering food to the needy and elderly, and frequently sewed for Church affiliated programs. Carolyn was a great seamstress and wonderful cook. She was always extremely artistic, enjoyed crafts, and was a lover of gardening and flowers. The most important thing in Carolyn's life was her family. Whatever she was doing, family was always first. She was a loving wife and caring mother, spending countless hours with her children and grandchildren. Carolyn will be dearly missed by her six children, Linda (Yoshihito) Yabushita of Nagoya, Japan, David (Patricia) Hartley of Racine, Gary (Eileen) Hartley of Folsom, Calif., Janet (Roger) Brueggeman, Roger (Jill) Hartley, all of Racine, and Andy (Kimberly) Hartley of Arvada, Colo.; 18 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren. Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick; her grandson, Brian; and her parents C. Edwin and Maude Belle Kirkwood. Relatives and friends may meet with the family on Friday, August 23, 2013 at the Wilson Funeral Home from 5:30 until 7:30 PM. Private entombment will be at West Lawn Memorial Park.
