Charlene Marie Durrett , 80, passed away on April 19, 2017 in Lubbock, Texas. She was born on April 27, 1936 in Morton, Texas to Charlie Henry Turney and Thelma Marie Turney (Turnbough). Charlene Marie (Turney) Durrett, Wife, Mother, Scholar/Historian, Teacher, and Coach. Charlene was a talented lady who had the will and determination to succeed at whatever she began. Charlene earned an Associate Degree while attending New Mexico State University at Carlsbad and she went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Education and Masters of Business Education at Eastern New Mexico University. Charlene accomplished this while raising a family that included two sons who were honored to be her children and to have her as a role model and friend. Following their graduation from high school, Charlene embarked upon a career in teaching. She began her teaching career as a New Mexico History teacher at St. Edwards Catholic School in Carlsbad, NM. Charlene's subject matter knowledge was superior in that she taught both the cowboy and the Indian perspective. She also taught both the North and the South sides of the Civil War as fought in New Mexico. Charlene and Tom then moved to Bloomfield, NM where she taught Business Education and coached an award winning Cheerleading Squad. Charlene fell during this period and was disabled. This led to her retirement from the field of education. Her debilitating condition lasted until her death on April 19 2017, just one week short of her 81st birthday. Survivors include her husband, Thomas James Durrett of Portales, NM; son, Thomas James Durrett II (JD) and wife Glenda Ann, children Shannon Durrett and Marina Durrett; son, Dr. Robin D. Durrett and wife Sharla, children Johnathan Durrett and Jacob Durrett; sister, Stella Henley, children Chris and Vicki Peugh and Lori and Bob Waldrop; numerous cousins in eastern New Mexico and west Texas.She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie Henry Turney and Thelma Marie Turney; brother, Charlie Jay Turney; baby sister, Etta Fern Turney; baby sister, Geraldine Ann Turney. Graveside services for Charlene Marie Durrett will be 10:00 am, Saturday, May 27, 2017 at the Portales Cemetery with Reverend Don Stackpole officiating. A reception will follow at First United Methodist Church in Portales from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to a . The Durrett family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the arrangements. Cremation has taken place.
