Charles Donald Anderson, 86, of Rockwell, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2016. Don was born on April 22, 1930, in Bluefield, W. Va., to the late Charlie Dillard and Thelma (Byrd) Anderson and graduated from high school in Williamson, West Virginia. After high school, Don proudly served his country in the
United States Air Force during the
Korean Conflict. After serving in the military, he worked as a General Foreman for Norfolk and Western Railroad for over 20 years. He was also a driver for Team Chevrolet. Don attended Trinity Wesleyan Church in Salisbury and was a member of Highland Avenue Baptist Church in Mullens, W. Va., where he was the Youth Choir Director. Don was a sports enthusiast and a big supporter of little league baseball, coaching his son's team when he was younger. He enjoyed cooking for his family and friends and loved to spend time in the outdoors. His family and friends were most important to him and he never met a stranger in his life. Don is survived by his son, Craig Anderson and wife Angela of Rockwell; two daughters: Kim Fortney of Danville, Va. and Pamela Hitt and husband Frank of Danville, Va.; seven grandchildren: Franklin Hitt, Erica Hermanson, Rachel Cox, Leslie Smith, Carolyn and Thomas Fortney, and Chris Anderson; and seven great-grandchildren: Elena Hitt, Kevin, Nathan, and Brian Hermanson, Claire Cox, and Skylar and Avery Smith; and sister-in-law, Jeanne Anderson and several nephews and a niece, all of Minnesota. Don also had a very special place in his heart for David and Patty Smith and their family, whom he viewed as a second family. They affectionately called him Papa Don. In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his wife, Janice Carol Shannon Anderson; one brother, Melvin Anderson; and one sister, Elsie Horne. Visitation and Service: A visitation will be held on Saturday, Oct. 29, from 1-2:30 p.m., at Powles Staton Funeral Home in Rockwell, NC. A service will follow at 2:30 p.m., in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Roger Meyers officiating. Burial will take place on Monday, Oct. 31, at 10 a.m., in the Salisbury National Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard and the NC National Honor Guard.
