Charles Donald Hafner, MDNaples, FLCharles Donald "Don", Hafner, MD, age 89, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on April 23, 2017 in Naples, Florida. He married the love of his life, Martha (Nee: Hehman) 64 years ago, sharing a beautiful love story that inspired and touched many. Don was born on August 13, 1927 in Covington, Kentucky. He graduated from St. Xavier High School. Don served in the United States Navy, 1945-46, aboard YMS 363, South Pacific. He earned degrees from Xavier University, Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, and University of Michigan. Further medical training included an Internship at Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati, Ohio, a Surgical Residency at Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, Michigan and a Research and Clinical Vascular Fellowship at Good Samaritan Hospital. Don was a Vascular and General Surgeon, a pioneer in many vascular surgeries in the greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky areas, including the first tri-state: coronary artery bypass (with Dr. Ernest Meese), pulmonary embolectomy with CP bypass, and cadaver kidney transplant. He published 65 medical manuscripts and textbook chapters. He was a Founding Member and Council of the Midwestern Vascular Surgical Society and a Distinguished Fellow of the Society of Vascular Medicine. Don had many interests including fishing, golfing, hunting, dancing, his church, playing the piano, and spending time with his loving family and many treasured friends. Don and Martha enjoyed a lively retirement on Marco Island for 25 years. Don is survived by his loving wife, Martha Hafner; his daughters Lynn (Tom) Sweeney, Terry (Tom) Coyle, Cathy (Joe) Hasselt, and Jenny Graham; and his son, David (Julie) Hafner; and his grandchildren Lauren, Erin, Ryan, Katelyn, Bethany, Kassie, Joe, Hayley, Allie, Gabby, Juliana, Leah, Charlie and Henry; and great grandchildren Makahla and Hunter; and nephew David (Carol) Koester. Visitation will be held Monday, May 1, 9:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at St. Antoninus Church, 1500 Linneman Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45238. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Xavier High School, 600 W.
