Charles Ensign BunceWindsor HeightsCharles Ensign Bunce, 96, died Saturday, January 28, 2017, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. A Memorial Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, February 2 at Iles Westover Chapel concluding with a 7 p.m. Prayer Service. Private family burial will be at Glendale Cemetery.Charles was born on April 1, 1920 in Valley Junction West Des Moines, Iowa to Bessie and Ralph Bunce. Charles attended school in Valley Junction and graduated from Valley High School in 1938. He attended Drake University and enlisted in the Navy, November 1942. He served in the Marshall Islands until 1945.Charles worked for the Des Moines Register for 36 years as a Circulation Manager. He was a member of the American Legion and very active in bowling, hunting and fishing. He and his wife, Delia, loved to travel to California.Charles married Delia Harris in 1940 in Beaman, Iowa. To their union four children were born, Stephen (Kyle) of Clive, Bradley (Bridget) of Ankeny, Greg of Windsor Heights, and daughter, Carla Schindler of Howell, Michigan. In addition to his children Charles is survived by six grandchildren, Nathan (Katie) Bunce of Urbandale, Nicole Bunce of Clive, Karen (Jeff) Baker of Des Moines, David Bunce of Ankeny, Tom (Michelle) of Des Moines and Delaney Schindler of Howell, Michigan; nine great grandchildren, Jack and Henry Bunce, Will Walcott Jr., Ashley Smock, Allysa (Scott) Jacobs, Alexandria Smock, Trevor and Emily Baker and Victoria Bunce; and six great-great grandchildren, Kimber, David and Alayna Jacobs, Vera and William Chumbly and Jaiden Smock.Those preceding Charles in death include his parents; wife, Delia; brother, Melvin; granddaughter, Kimberley Gustafson; and great-great grandchild, Conor Jacobs.Memorial contributions may be directed to the West Des Moines Christian Church, 4501 Mills Civic Parkway, West Des Moines, IA 50265.
