Charles Francis, “Chuck” Parvin, Jr., 78, entered his heavenly rest on Friday December 9, 2016, after succumbing to a rare heart disease. A memorial service to celebrate Chuck’s life will be held on Saturday January 7, 2016 at 11am at Berwyn United Methodist Church, 140 Waterloo Road, Berwyn, PA 19312. Chuck was born on March 21, 1938 to Charles Francis and Helen Holden Parvin. He graduated from Altoona High School, Altoona, PA in 1956. Chuck met his bride, Elaine Neagley, at Juniata College, in Juniata, PA in 1958. At Juniata, Chuck played drums in a dance band which performed at college and local civic events. Each set ended with “Pennies From Heaven”, after which Chuck would dance with his sweetheart. Betrothed in 1960, Chuck and Elaine were married for 56 years. As in life, they also partnered onstage in the 1970s as members of the Gilbert and Sullivan Players of Philadelphia, singing in the chorus of several Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, directed by the late Bruce E. Montgomery. Chuck received his Bachelor of Arts in History from Juniata College in 1960. He obtained his Masters of Education from Temple University in 1965. In 1973 Chuck was initiated into Temple University’s Phi Delta Kappa chapter. Chuck educated young minds for 38 years as a public school teacher. He taught initially at Coventry Elementary School in the Owen J. Roberts School District. For the last 35 years, he instilled his love of learning in students at the Colonial School District. He taught 3rd and 4th grade at Whitemarsh Elementary and 4th and 5th grade at Colonial Middle School. Chuck was a warm and caring teacher, known affectionately as “Mr. Rogers” to his students. Students often wore his distinctive cardigan sweaters in tribute to Chuck. He also inspired a generation of students to love musical theater, after directing a student production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Pirates of Penzance” in 1973. Chuck was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. After retiring from teaching in 1997, he doted on his three grandchildren. He saw his grandson Andrew Gregory earn his second degree black belt. He cheered on granddaughter Elizabeth Anne at gymnastics competitions. He attended granddaughter Meredith Elaine’s high school graduation. Chuck enjoyed reading and learning about American, European and Russian wartime history. Chuck waged his greatest battle, against cancer, beginning in 2007, when he underwent a life- saving operation which prolonged his life for another nine years. During that time he was able to fulfill a lifelong dream to visit Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria. He also celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary. Chuck is survived by his wife, Elaine, his two children, Charles Douglas and Gregory Ross, his daughters in-law Deborah Parvin and Erin Parvin, his three grandchildren, Meredith, Andrew, and Elizabeth, his sisters -in -law Barbara Neagley and Sylvia Fahnestock, and brothers -in –law, Ross Lynn Neagley and Robert Fahnestock. Chuck was a faithful 53 year member of Berwyn United Methodist Church, where he served as a usher for many years. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the general fund of the Berwyn United Methodist Church. Relatives and friends are invited to call after 10am on January 7th, 2017 at the Berwyn United Methodist Church, 140 Waterloo Rd. Berwyn PA 19312. A memorial service will be celebrated at 11am. Fellowship afterwards at the church.
