Charles "Chuck" Robert Smith, 80Charles "Chuck" Robert Smith, 80, of Lafayette, Indiana peacefully passed away at his home on Nov. 12, 2015 at 2:00 am after a five month battle with Bile Duct Cancer. He was born on August 6, 1935 the son of James Everette Smith and Marilla Louise (Green) Smith. He was a graduate of Attica High School where he won the Athletic Scholarship Award as a stand out track and cross country runner while establishing many school records. He earned a scholarship to become a Boilermaker. He took coursework at Purdue University and later the University of Wisconsin. Chuck served as plant superintendent at C & D Batteries in Attica, Indiana for 15+ years and then transitioned to maintenance at Purdue University, where he retired after 21 years.He was a member of St Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Attica, IN where he taught bible school for a time. He and Nancy have been members of Blessed Sacrament Church in West Lafayette, Indiana since May 1, 1980.In 1956 he married his high school sweetheart, Nancy Dean (Terrell) Smith. They were both competitive bridge players. They won many tournaments, prizes and have had their names engraved for winning at Morton School for seniors, Canyon Inn at Spencer, IN and many times at the Prophetstown Bridge Tournament. He was an avid bird watcher and spent many hours watching and feeding the birds in Indiana and at their winter home in Arizona. Chuck enjoyed mountain hiking and was quite the outsdoorsman. He was an accomplished mushroom hunter having an uncanny knack for finding morels for his entire family each spring. In his younger years he hunted and trapped. He took his children and their friends down the Wabash River, Tippecanoe River and Pine Creek. He loved his time with his children, grand children and lately his great-grand children teaching several of them how to fish. He enjoyed most all sports particularly boxing. After retiring they traveled all over the world and spent winters at their home in Sun Lakes, Arizona.Surviving in addition to his wife are five children: Gregory Smith (Cathie) of West Lebanon, IN; Tamera Fox (Gary) of Granger, IN; Vanessa Johnston (Rick) of Mahomet, IL; Douglas Smith (Pamela) of Lafayette, IN; and Angelina Fischbach (Michael) of Fowler, IN. Also surviving are eleven grand children: Levi Smith (Michaela), Megan Farmer (Jared), Emily Downs (Cory), Jessie Kinney (Ryan), Justin Fox, Brianna Witsman (Blake), Austin Smith, Abby Smith, Kameron Fischbach, Ty Fischbach and Nicholas Fischbach. Seven great-grand children Alleha Smith, Carter Smith, Sophia Farmer, Jackson Farmer, Tristan Downs, Mikayla Kinney, and Bennett Witsman, Also one sister Betty Ratliff (Jim) of West Point, IN; two brothers Richard Smith of West Lafayette, IN and Vernie Smith (Karen) of Grantville, PA. Also surviving are several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Francis Lorraine Coleman.The family will celebrate his life from 4:00 pm-8:00 pm on Friday November 20, 2015 with a Funeral Memorial Mass on Saturday at 12:00 pm. with Rev. David Buckles officiating. The Rosary will be recited at 11:30 am prior to the Funeral Memorial Mass. All services will be held at Church of the Blessed Sacrament, 2224 Sacramento Drive, West Lafayette, IN. Chuck generously donated his body to the Indiana University School of Medicine, Anatomical Education Program.In lieu of flowers those wishing may contribute to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Guardian Angel Hospice or a .Condolences may be registered at www.mausfuneralhome.com.
