Charlotte "Valjean" Kennedy, age 88, died Monday, September 21, 2015, in Brookville PA. She was born on October 12, 1926, in Tonowanda, NY, to Homer F. and Charlotte (Weary) Mowrey. At 3 weeks of age, her parents moved to Hormtown, near Reynoldsville, PA, where her parents resided until their death. On December 10, 1945, she married Roy J. Kennedy. They celebrated 61 years of marriage that ended with his death in 2006. Roy was a
WWII Navy Veteran, and they began their married life in Charleston, SC. After the war, they purchased farmland in Ramsaytown and made their home there. She was well known for her Dahlia flower garden and enjoyed making lawn ornaments and quilts. Valjean worked for Cameron, Sylvania, and Brookville Glove Factory, and many food service companies. She spent many years in the dairy and beef cattle farming industry as well. She was also very active in community organizations such as Green Valley Grange, Pomona Grange, Order of Eastern Star, and multiple local service organizations. Valjean came from a musical family. Her parents and all 5 siblings, as well as herself, played musical instruments. She played guitar and piano. They were involved in and enjoyed country and square dance music. She enjoyed traveling and yearly attended Roy's "Ship Reunions" that were held in various locations throughout the states. She remained at her home until 2013, first residing at Brookside Senior Living, and then eventually Laurelbrooke, both in Brookville, PA. She is survived by 1 daughter, Rita (Jerry) Sunealitis, of Brookville, PA; 2 grandsons, Mark (Stephanie) Sunealitis of Brookville, PA, and Kevin (Makayla) Sunealitis of Mahaffey; 5 great-grandchildren, Abby, Olivia, Whitney, Cole, and Nora Sunealitis. She is also survived by 1 sister, Evelyn (James) Grant of Brockway, PA, and 1 brother, W. Dan Mowrey of Reynoldsville, PA. In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by 1 sister, Betty (Bob) Crawford; and 2 brothers Homer Junior Mowery and Mervin Mowrey. Family and friends will be received on Thursday, September 24, 2015, from 2 – 4pm and 6 – 8pm, at the McKinney – d'Argy Funeral Home, 345 Main St., Brookville, PA, 15825. A funeral service will be held for her on Friday, September 25, 2015, beginning at 2:00pm, also at the funeral home, with the Rev. Michael Garvey officiating. Interment to take place at Lake Lawn Memorial Park in Reynoldsville, PA.
