Dr. Clyde G. SussmanZANESVILLE: Dr. Clyde G. Sussman, age 99 of Zanesville, Ohio died at 6:45 am July 26, 2016 under the care of hospice at the Willow Haven Nursing Home.He was born on January 2, 1917 in Columbus, Ohio, the only son of Isadore and Lynn (Gitlin) Sussman.Dr. Sussman graduated from Hartford City High School in Hartford City, Indiana in 1934, received a Bachelor's of Science Degree from
Indiana University in 1938, and graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1942. He was a
World War II
Army Veteran. He served in the Army 1943-46, spending much of his time as a surgeon on a medical ship. He was honorably discharged as a Captain. He completed three residencies in total. He served his first residency at Letterman Army Hospital in San Francisco, California. He completed a second residency at Boston Children's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, while also teaching at Harvard Medical School in Boston. He completed a post graduate residency at Baltimore Eye & Ear Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland from 1946-1949. He returned to Baltimore 1953-1956 to acquire a specialty in ophthalmology. Dr. Sussman established his practice in Zanesville, Ohio in 1949 and retired in 1988. He was an extraordinary physician not only because of his talent, but because of his ability to listen and teach, his loving and caring approach, and willingness to make sacrifices for the good of patience in a graceful manner. He truly believed it was a privilege to serve people and he is remembered by patients for his skill and comforting bedside manner. He was beloved by his patients. He was a member of the American Legion, AMVETS post 1776, Indiana University Alumni Association, Indiana University Marching Hundred, Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, and
VFW. He enjoyed reading about new advances in medicine, watching classic films, and golfing. His life's passions were rooted in swing and jazz music and Indiana University basketball. He is survived by a son, Verne (Beth) Sussman of Ormand by the Sea, Florida; two daughters, Celeste Sussman (Ben) Jennings of Zanesville, Cara (Nicola) Sussman of Blacklick; 13 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren; and his only sister Melva (Sussman) Hamer of Carmel, Indiana. Dr. Sussman was preceded in death in addition to his parents, by his wife, June (Gibson) Sussman who died August 5, 1987 and his first wife Marjorie (Brown) Sussman Schronz who died May 5, 2006. Visitation will be 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm Friday July 29, 2016 at the Bryan & Hardwick Funeral Home with funeral service being held at 11:00 am on Saturday July 30, 2016. Burial will conclude with Military Honors conducted by the local VFW Post 1058 at the Zanesville Memorial Park Cemetery.In Lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made Genesis Hospice.
