AVILLA — Columbus H. Jacobs, age 69, died on Monday, February 10, 2014, at 12:12 p.m. at his home in Avilla surrounded by his loving family. He was born on May 19, 1944, in Pippapasses, Kentucky, and was the son of Ova Jacobs and Geneva (Short) Hughes. On December 14, 1963, he married the love of his life, Virginia Lee Ashley, in Sassafrass, Kentucky. They moved to Indiana 48 years ago, coming from Amburgy, Kentucky. Mr. Jacobs worked for Felderman Construction in Fort Wayne, and retired from there in 2008. He was a very active member of the Harbor of Love Baptist Church in Kendallville. He enjoyed gardening, taking care of his chickens, and working at the church. He adored spending precious time with his grandkids, being with his family and friends, and most of all sitting on the back patio of their house with his love, Virginia Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Virginia Jacobs; Three sons and daughters-in-law, Homer and Debra Jacobs of Avilla, Donald and Deborah Jacobs of Fort Wayne and James and Denise Jacobs of Fort Wayne; two daughters and a son-in-law, Mary Jacobs of Tower, Minnesota and Holly and Antonio Pita Jr. of Kendallville; his grandchildren, Juston Jacobs, Brandon Jacobs, Samantha Jacobs, Rachel Jacobs, Brian Jacobs, April Pecchia, Scott Kesler Jr., Cody Kesler, Josh Kesler, Matthew Jacobs, Jennifer Jacobs, Lucas Jacobs, Destany Taggart, Lilliana Pita, Junior Pita, Emmanuel Pita, Armani Pita and Roman Pita; his great-grandchildren, Emily Jacobs, Zoey Pecchia, Dane Pecchia, Lucy Pecchia, Daisy Kesler, Katelyn Jacobs, Adalyn Rittenhouse, and one great on the way, Kaylee Jacobs; three brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Norma Hughes, David and Ida Hughes and Charles and Christine Hughes, all of Hindman, Kentucky; and two sisters and a brother-in-law, Betty and Don Combs, and Myrtle Slone, all of Kentucky. He is preceded in death by his parents, and siblings, Irene Slone, Ezza Mae Hensley, Willard Hughes, John Hughes, Sally Slone and Kermit Hughes. Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Charles Mosley on Friday, February 14, 2014, at 11 a.m. at the Harbor of Love Baptist Church in Kendallville. Visitation will be on Thursday, February 13, 2014, from 3-7 p.m., with an evening service beginning at 7 p.m. at the church. There will also be one hour of visitation prior to the funeral on Friday.
