Holsen, Daniel E.Daniel E. Holsen, age 84, passed away peacefully early Saturday morning September 16, 2017, surrounded by loving family members.He was born on September 30, 1932 in Manitowoc, son of the late Edward and Cecelia (Homel) Holsen. Daniel was a graduate from Manitowoc Lincoln High School with the class of 1951. Daniel was in the Army National Guard as a Rifle Marksman. He joined the
United States Navy in 1952 and earned commendations including China Service, National Defense, Good Conduct, United Nations, and
Korean War Service. Daniel was a part of Operation Wigwam as a Gunner's Mate on the Earnest G. Small Destroyer DDR-838. He received his honorable discharge from the Navy in 1956. On August 9, 1956 he married Dorothy Lusnia at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Manitowoc. Daniel was employed as a Journeyman Tool and Die Maker at Mirro Aluminum Company and retired from Lakeside Machine Shop in 1996. He was a life long hunter, also enjoying trap shooting with his buddies in retirement. He also enjoyed reading Louis L'Amour western novels. Daniel was the go to person for anything mechanical that needed fixing. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, teaching them how to shoot a gun, explore the woods, and drive the lawn tractor. During his retirement, he participated in the Honor Flight to Washington DC in 2016 and also served with
VFW Honor Guard Post 659 to honor fellow servicemen.Survivors include his wife: Dorothy Holsen, Manitowoc; his children: Darla (Tom) McCarty, Stillwater, MN; Denise Holsen, Manitowoc; Dawn Holsen-Loughnan, Manitowoc; Dan (Ann) Holsen, Manitowoc; six grandchildren: Rachele Loughnan; Brenda McCarty; Vincent Loughnan; Brooke Loughnan; Emma Holsen; Grayden Holsen; one sister and one brother-in-law: Doreen (Stephen) Strouf, Manitowoc. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. Daniel was preceded in death by one sister and one brother-in-law: Diane (Andy) Endries; four sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law. Funeral Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, September 21, 2017 at St. Francis of Assisi on Marshall (1114 South 21st Street), Manitowoc. Officiating at the service will be the Rev. Dave Pleier. Entombment will follow the services at Calvary Mausoleum, (2601 South 14th Street), Manitowoc, where military rites will be accorded by the VFW Otto Oas Post #659.The family will greet relatives and friends on Thursday, September 21, 2017 at St. Francis of Assisi on Marshal (1114 South 21st Street), Manitowoc, from 9:00 a.m. until 11:15 a.m. Expression of sympathy may be sent to the family by visiting
