DANIEL J. GLASS obituaryDaniel J. Glass died September 22, 2013, in Fairbanks, Alaska. He was born on December 8, 1984, in Juneau, Alaska.Daniel was a scientist, writer and sailor. He received bachelor and masters degrees in biology at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks. He recently published a paper on his research on boreal forest fungi in the journal Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution and was preparing another research article for publication at the time of his death.Daniel loved the sea. He crewed on the 48 foot sailboat SECOND WIND with Captain Bill Heumann along the western coast of Central and South America and across the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic Oceans. He just completed a salmon fishing season with his uncle, Eric Jordan, on the troller I GOTTA.Daniel's friends and family will remember him as curious, witty, eccentric and a storehouse of knowledge. He had a unique view of the world and his logbooks from his travels reveal unexpected insights about culture, history and nature. He is survived by his parents, Frank and Karen Glass of Juneau; brother, Richard (Amanda) Glass of Washington, DC; sister, Kari Glass of Seattle; grandmother Anne Glass; aunts Dorothy Glass and Barbara (Jack) Leachman; uncles Eric (Sarah) Jordan and Ben Troka; many cousins and friends; and his cat, Kaya. A memorial service will be held at the Columbarium at the Shrine of St. Therese in Juneau, Alaska, at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 28, 2013. A potluck reception will follow at the Lodge at the Shrine.
