Daniel (Dan) Maes a longtime resident of Las Vegas passed away on Sunday, Dec. 20 at his home surrounded by his beloved family.He was born on Nov. 12th 1934 in El Mesteno to the late Antonio Maes and Maria Henna Maes.He was united in marriage to Nora Maes on March 23, 1957 at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Las Vegas. He was a lifelong Catholic and member at Our Lady of Sorrows Church.Dan moved to Las Vegas at the age of five. He attended his school years in Las Vegas. At the age of 18, he joined the United States Marines and during this time he was stationed in Korea, Okinawa, and Japan. Where he also served in the Korean War.He also obtained many medals and badges: Army Service Ribbon, Army Reserve Components Overseas Training Ribbon, Korean Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, Rifle M16 Sharpshooter Badge, United Nations Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal with one Bronze Star.He worked for 27 years at the New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute as building and grounds superintendent until he was activated for Operation Desert Storm in 1991. There he served for six months then retired with 31 years of service.He was preceded in death by his parents, Antonio and Maria Henna Maes; tia, Anita Romero, who raised him; brother, Ernest Maes, and brother-in-law, Percy Madrid.He is survived by his loving wife Nora Maes of 58 years, his sons, Daniel (Sonny) Jr. (Donna); their children, Danielle, Desarae, and Deonna Maes of Moriarty, and Lynette Vincent of Las Vegas, Marvin Maes of Las Vegas; his children, Charles (Jolene), Matthew (Olivia), all from Albuquerque, and daughter Olivia Simone Maes of Las Vegas; his daughter, Pearl Maes (Joseph Ulibarri); children, David Maes (Marissa) and Jade Maes-Ulibarri, all of Las Vegas; step-grandchildren, Secret Roybal (Ben) and Stormy Lepird (William) of Las Cruces; and Johnny Sanchez (Jessica). Also surviving are his great-grandchildren, Heaven Rose Vincent, Cezar Maes-Ritchie, Diego Maes, Jeremiah and Selah Maes, baby Amor; step great-grandchildren, Aubrey, Brayden Roybal, and William Lepird Jr. Also survived by his sisters, Nora Madrid, Mabel Montoya and Lillian Baca; his brother, Eloy Maes (Eileen), also survived by his uncle, Louie Maes (Eloisa), who was like a brother to him. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Serving as pallbearers will be all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.Cremation has taken place at his request. The rosary services will be at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Our Lady of Sorrows Church. Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. on Wednesday at Our Lady of Sorrows Church. Burial services will be held at 3 p.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
