Daniel Padberg Obituary

Nov 01, 2016 - Jan 12, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
Padberg, DanielDaniel lost his life in a car accident on Dec. 12, 2016 near Bryan, TX . Daniel was born on Nov. 9th, 1931 in Summersville, Missouri, the youngest son of Christopher and Ruth Badgley Padberg. He enjoyed growing up in the beautiful Ozarks on the family farm with his brothers and sister. He was fortunate to have a wonderful education from the University of Missouri (B.S. and M.S.) and UC Berkeley (PhD) which prepared him well for his future as an educator. He was an Assistant Professor of Agricultural Economics at The Ohio State University, then Professor at Cornell University, Head of Department at the University of Illinois, Dean at the University of Massachusetts and then Professor Emeritas at Texas A & M University. He was a visiting professor for one year at University of Manchester, England. He was active in his profession, serving as president of his professional association, AAEA, and was appointed to the Whitehouse Taskforce on Farmer Bargaining in 1968. He was the author of 4 books and numerous publications, and he enjoyed learning about different cultures and sharing research insights with treasured colleagues around the world. Dan ended his career with a Fulbright Chair, teaching seminars in Viterbo, Italy (1997).He was a veteran, and served his country in the US Navy from 1955-1958. It was in the Navy that he met and courted his first wife, Mildred Frances True, who was a Navy Occupational Therapist. They had 3 children, Susan, Jean and Carol, in a long and happy union that lasted until her death in 1997.In 1998 he married his second wife, Sarah O'Brien, and they also had a long and happy union, enjoying their golden years, extended families, and UU faith community, together. Sadly Sarah perished from injuries sustained in this same fatal car accident.Despite his numerous gifts, Daniel was a humble, loving and very approachable person. He enjoyed keeping up with his 7 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews, singing in choirs, volunteering to causes he believed in, and gardening (although the Texas climate did present a challenge). He was also an enthusiastic Rotarian and member of several other service and social groups. He will be dearly missed by his survivors, who include his sister Mary Lou Creech, his daughters Susan Padberg (and family), Jean Padberg (and family) and Carol Padberg (and family), his grandchildren, and his many nieces and nephews. We also want to thank the family of Sarah O'Brien for their many years of love and support to our father.Celebration of Dan's life will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church in New Braunsfel, Texas on Monday 1/2/17 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Padberg Educational Trust, Security Bank of the Ozarks, P.O. Box 8, Summersville, MO 65571, All are welcome."
