Dettlaff, David B.David B. Dettlaff, age 73, of Oshkosh, died Wednesday morning, September 13, 2017 at home with his family by his side. Dave was born on July 10, 1944 in Oshkosh, the son of Ruppert A. and Sophia M. (Metko) Dettlaff. He was number 14 of 17 children. David was raised and attended school in Oshkosh. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1962 and was stationed in San Diego, CA where he was assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Bon Homme Richard until his discharge in 1966. He returned to Oshkosh and married Marilyn Sonnenberg. They had two sons, Damian and Derek before being divorced in 1983. Dave met Dawn Measure and they were married in April of 1987. Dave worked at the University of Wisconsin from 1970 until his retirement in 1999. He enjoyed fishing but hunting was his true passion. Friends often heard him countdown to opening day of the archery season each year ("128 days and a wake-up....!). In addition to deer hunting in Wisconsin, David hunted in South Africa in 2005 (fulfilling a childhood dream!) and New Zealand in 2016. David was so proud of his sons and what good men they have grown to be. He adored his grandchildren and would smile just thinking about them. He was a father figure to many, and he loved to mentor young people on hunting and fishing. Dave felt close to God when he was outdoors. He said the woods were his church and a tree stand was his pew.David is survived by and his memory will be cherished by his wife, Dawn; son Damian (Tara) and their children, Kian and Aria; son Derek and his children, Hope and Noelle; daughter Rhonda (Pat) Schultz and their sons, Colin and Tanner; mother-in-law, Lois Roderick; sisters, Kathleen Kitzman, Lois Eaton, Judith Friar and Mary Jane Bartels; brothers, Donald (Marlene) Dettlaff, Gerald (RoseMary) Dettlaff, James (Karen) Dettlaff, Tom Dettlaff and Glen Dettlaff; sister-in-law, Grace Dettlaff; brothers-in-law, Daniel Becker and Dale Smith. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends and special friends, Jimbo and Jayne Boyce and their sons, JJ and Joshua, and Mike and Amy Sievert and their children David and Aleah. Dave is also survived by the family pet "The Grizz". He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Robert Dettlaff; sisters, Sr. Merryn (Ruth) Dettlaff, Dorothy (Carlton) Phillips, Virginia (Arthur "Buddy") Borski, Patricia Becker, Marlyn (Glen) Gutsmiedl, Gloria Smith; sister-in-law, Linda Dettlaff and a brother-in-law, Robert Eaton.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Dave on Monday, September 18, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. in St. Jude Parish, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, (corner of Knapp and 6th Street) with the Rev. Matt Simonar as celebrant. Burial will follow with full military honors at Lake View Memorial Park Cemetery. A time of visiting and sharing of memories will be held at the Poklasny Funeral Home, 870 W. South Park Ave. on Sunday from 2-5 p.m. and also again at the church on Monday from 12:30 p.m. until the time of Mass.The family would like to thank the staff at Affinity Visiting Nurses Hospice, especially Lisa, Toni, Crystal, Kari, and Nicole for their compassion and help in caring for David in his final days, as well as Dr. Brad Heraly and the staff at the Michael D. Wachtel Cancer Center.David, you're my always and forever...Ta da hunt!
