Dr David F Piro, 86, of Overland Park, Kansas (formerly of Watertown, SD) passed away from complications of Parkinson's Disease on 11/19/16. He was born on December 30th, 1929 in Seattle, Washington to Ernest and Evelyn Piro. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Bonnie. He spent the early years of his life in the Northwest until he graduated from O'Dea High School. It was there that he developed his love of sports and competition. At Seattle University he graduated with honors and was an outstanding baseball player. He later was inducted into the Seattle University Sports Hall of Fame. Upon graduation, he then attended Creighton University, where he received his MD. It was there that he met his future wife, Bonnie Spotts. Dave entered the
Army Medical Officer Corps as a general surgeon where he served at various duty stations in Texas, Germany, Colorado, California and as a commander of a MASH unit in Korea. During his career he was selected to perform re- entry physicals for the astronauts of the Gemini Space Program. Lieutenant Colonel Piro finished his military service commanding the military hospital at Fort Ord, California. Dr. Piro settled in Watertown, South Dakota with his wife and five children. He was a general surgeon and partner with the Bartron Clinic. Dr. Piro was an avid golfer as well a Life Master Bridge player. For twenty-five years he practiced medicine when life tossed him a curve ball. During the Persian Gulf War in 1991, he was recalled into the military service, where COL Piro served as Chief Surgeon, Munson Army Hospital, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. During his time at Fort Leavenworth, his wife, Bonnie passed away. COL Piro retired to Lansing, Kansas. In retirement he found great joy in his volunteer work at St. Vincent Clinic and Leavenworth Assistance Center. His greatest pride was his participation and work with the prison ministries in Leavenworth, where he received many honors. It was at this time that he remarried and he and his new wife, Anne have resided in the Lansing and Overland Park area for the past decade. He is survived by his wife, Anne, his brother, Don Piro (Ellen), his children; Michelle Theis (Ed), Scott (Patty), Dave (Misty), Susan Reichling (Gary), and Mark (Lynnda), his grandchildren, Jessica, Michael, Bonnie, Matthew, Erin, Austin, Brandon, Zach, Brenna, Madison, Isabella, Madilynn, Adam, Marina, as well as great- grandchildren; Tyson, Jackson and Maybelle, niece, Natalia, and nephew, Nicholas. He was also survived by his stepchildren, Michael McMahon (Renee), William McMahon (Molly), John Paul McMahon (Greg Coles), Debra McMahon, Ann McMahon (Kelly Moreno) and seven step- grandchildren. The funeral will be held on Dec. 2, 2016 at 11AM with visitation at 10AM the morning of the funeral at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, located at 900 Ida Street, Lansing, KS 66043. A celebration of his life will be held this spring at a later date in Watertown, SD.
