David George Thomas, Sr. age 88 passed away on January 25, 2008 at Kittitas Valley Community Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was an Ellensburg resident for over 63 years. David was born on April 8, 1919 in Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania. David graduated from Frackville High School then he joined the CCC's. He then continued his education in Business at LaSalle University. David served proudly and honorably with the U.S. Army during World War II with HS Company of the 18th Engineers. During his time in the Army he received several awards and medals. After David's honorable discharge following WWII he moved to Ellensburg with his bride, Janet; they were married on March 5, 1942 in Vancouver, WA. Once they arrived in Ellensburg he went into business for himself selling war surplus and working for Firestone. In 1947 he entered the auto business selling Tucker automobiles. In 1948 he established Major and Thomas Oldsmobile in Ellensburg. In 1971 he formed Dave Thomas Inc and son Dave Jr. joined the business in 1972. In 1981 University Auto Center was formed when Faltus Motor Co. and Dave Thomas Inc. joined forces. David always had a passion for the auto industry, even after his retirement, and was a well know face at the dealership. David was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Ellensburg, the Elks Lodge, American Legion and the Washington State Auto Dealers Association. He was an avid golfer and in earlier years enjoyed boating, snowmobiling as well as fishing and traveling. David is survived by his loving wife of 66 years Janet K. Thomas, son David G Thomas, Jr. and his wife Kim of Ellensburg, daughter Cheryl Lynn Gillespie and her husband John of Bremerton, WA, brother Paul Thomas of Willow Grove, PA, grandchildren Amy James and her husband Rory, Chad Gillespie and his wife Callie, DJ Thomas and his wife Jamie, Jarred Thomas and five Great Grandchildren, Delaney, Keaton and Ainsley James & Ethan and Spencer Gillespie. David is preceded in death by his parents, David P & Mae Thomas, brothers Farnsworth and Ivar Thomas. There will be a Celebration of David's life for family and friends at Rosewood Club House, 1100 Rosewood Ave in Ellensburg on Friday, February 1, 2008 from Noon – 2PM. Suggested family donations may be made to Children's Hospital and Medical Center/Hospital Foundation, PO Box 50020/S200 Seattle, WA 98145-5020 and Hospice of Ellensburg, 410 E. Mountain View Ave #3, Ellensburg, WA 98926. Private interment will take place at the IOOF Cemetery in Ellensburg. Arrangements are under the care of Steward & Williams Tribute Center in Ellensburg.
