He was truly a product of and very much a part of our greatest generation. He grew up in the state of Virginia, born in the mountains, growing up on the coast, and finishing high school and college in Richmond, where his father, the Rev. David F. White, Sr. was the founding pastor of Monument Heights Baptist Church.Upon his graduation from the University of Richmond with a double major in Organic Chemistry and Biology, he studied at the old Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY, earning his Masters of Divinity in 1955. He then moved to Baltimore and earned a Masters in Philosophy from Johns Hopkins University while serving as Pastor of Forest Baptist Church in Upperco, MD. From 1957-1966, Reverend White served as a Professor of Philosophy and Religion at the University of Richmond. In 1966, he accepted a similar position at Clemson University and moved his family to Pendleton, SC, where they lived for the next 13 years. While teaching at Clemson, he served several churches in the upstate of South Carolina as interim pastor, including First Baptist of Westminster and Beaverdam Baptist in Fairplay. He returned to Richmond in December of 1978 to become pastor of Weatherford Memorial Baptist Church where he served for 9 years, followed by 25 years as pastor of New Vision Baptist Church & Retreat Center. He also served as adjunct professor at multiple educational institutions. In 2013, he and Jackie returned to South Carolina. His last years were spent with his family in Anderson. After an evening of visitation on Monday, July 17, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Gray Mortuary in Pelzer, SC, a celebration of Reverend White's life will be held at First Baptist Church of Pendleton, SC, on Tuesday, July 18 at 1:00 p.m. The burial will immediately follow in the church cemetery, followed by a further celebration in the church fellowship hall. There will be many stories told about a truly great man. To honor his life and legacy, we ask all to do all they can to find a cure for the cruel diseases we call dementia, which rob us of great minds and precious memories.
