INDEPENDENCE – Deloris M. "Sally" Murphy, 90, of Strawberry Point, and formerly of Independence, died Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2017, at Unity Point -St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids.Sally was born on Jan. 8, 1927 in Independence, the daughter of Leroy E. and Lena (Martin) Higgins. She was a 1945 graduate of the Independence High School, and was married to Bernard J. "Bud" Murphy on May 30, 1947 in Tecumseh, Mich. The couple made their home in Independence. Sally was employed as a Certified Nursing Assistant, and as a Records Clerk at the Peoples Memorial Hospital in Independence for forty years prior to her retirement in 2000. Sally enjoyed spending time with her large family, her siblings, and friends. She was kind caring and generous in helping others. She is lovingly remembered for her thoughtfulness and cards for birthdays and special occasions. She was an excellent cook, and her favorite past times were watching the Chicago Cubs, Iowa Hawkeyes, having puff-corn and working on puzzle books. All who knew Sally were blessed and shared her love of life. She is survived by five children: Ray (Nancy) Murphy, Winthrop, Shelia (Tom) Holcomb, Sacramento, Calif., Cheryl (Bill) Winter, Strawberry Point, Patty Webster, Cedar Rapids, and Kelly (Randy Jones) Murphy, Cedar Rapids; a daughter-in-law, Billie Jean Murphy Kovalcheck, Carmichaels, Pa.; eighteen Grandchildren; twenty-one Great Grandchildren; eight Great Great Grandchildren; two sisters: Deleva Platt and Nancy J. Hoffman, both of Independence; and several precious Grand dogs.Sally was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bud in 2004; a son Mike Murphy; and four brothers: John, Richard, Arnold, and James Higgins.Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, with Rev. Dean Schlitter officiating. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery, Winthrop.
