Derake Clay Bookout was born on April 5, 1955 in Alamogordo to Deral and Doris Bookout. He attended school in Tularosa, graduating in 1973. Derake joined the Army after graduation. He was stationed in various cities in Germany and the U.S. One tour of duty was in Berlin, patrolling the Berlin Wall. Most of his tour, however, was as a helicopter mechanic. After 7 years, Derake left the Army and enrolled at a Helicopter Mechanic Technical School in Colorado. He worked at Ft. Bliss, later at Holloman AFB as a supervisor of the HVAC division. He loved to fish, hunt, and ride his Harley. A gruff man with a wicked sense of humor, he loved his family and friends. He adored his grandchildren, Lilian, Jr., Xander, Benjamin and Samuel, and they adored him. Derake was preceded in death by his father, Deral I. He is survived by his mother, Doris Bookout; his children, Stefani and Raymond Bookout and Daena Duran-Bookout; his siblings, Delilah and Deral Bookout II, and Debbie Bird; his girlfriend, Deanna who was such a wonderful, positive light in the last year of his life. Not to be forgotten is his Chuaweiner, Ginger. His many friends from all over the U.S. will miss him and mourn him as much as they loved and respected the hardcore man on the outside, and the tender man on the inside. Derake was definitely his own man. On March 1, 2017, Derake who loved his Harley, died with his love. A Memorial Service for Derake will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at 222 Galicia Road in Tularosa. A pot luck luncheon will be served after the service. The Bookout family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Alamogordo Funeral Home to direct the arrangements. To sign the online register book, please visit
