Derek Mario Baird, age 44, passed away on October 24th, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on May 4th, 1980, he brought immense joy to those around him especially his parents, Rich and Lorna (Tanari) Baird. Derek was a proud big brother to his only sister, Brittany.
Eulogies and a funeral blessing for Derek will begin at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, October 30th, at Nativity of Our Lord Parish (St. Anthony Church) in Spring Valley, followed by burial at Valley Memorial Park Cemetery. Due to space considerations, the visitation for Derek will be held on Tuesday, October 29th, from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM, at Nativity of Our Lord Parish (St. Anthony Church) in Spring Valley, with additional visitation on Wednesday morning, from 9:30 AM until time of services.

Derek's journey touched the lives of many, leaving behind cherished memories, many of which included his honorary family, The Orlandi's. He leaves behind a legacy of strength and resilience. His unwavering spirit in the face of adversity was an inspiration to all who knew him.
Derek graduated from Hall High School in 1998. He was proud to be a part of several talented sports teams during his high school years including the 1995 3A State Championship football team, 1996 3A State Runner Up football team, 1996/1997 Class A State Runner Up basketball team, and the 1997/1998 Class A State Runner Up basketball team. He would often return to his alma mater to cheer on the many talented athletes but mostly his godsons, Braden Curran and Jack Curran.
Derek worked as a pipefitter for the Local #597 Pipefitter Union. He was dedicated to his profession and loved being a part of the 597 Family.
Derek married his love, Maria (Francisco) on February 14th, 2015. They were blessed with three beautiful children, Emma, Bruno, and Luciana, and a loyal fur companion, Rona. Derek was passionate about many things in life, including the Fighting Illini, the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears, and Star Wars, but his love for his wife and children far surpasses any passions he may have had in his life.
Derek is survived by his loving family, including his wife, Maria; his children, Emma, Bruno, and Luciana; his parents, Rich and Lorna Baird; his sister, Brittany (Danny) Toraason; his in laws, Pete (Margie) Francisco, Gina (Alex) Riva, and Karla (Matt) Carboni. His nieces and nephews, Dominic Carboni, Luca Carboni, Giuliana Riva, Thomas Toraason, Max Toraason and Greta Toraason; his aunts and uncles, Mary (Mark) Miklavic, Dave (Carol) Baird, and Toni (Chuck) Stank; along with several cousins and many friends, who will forever hold memory. He will be remembered for his kindness, compassion, and the positive impact he had on everyone fortunate enough to have known him.
Serving as pallbearers will be his son, Bruno, along with T.J. and Tony Orlandi, Adam Curran, Shawn Jeppson, Joey Reed, and Danny Toraason.
He is preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Kenny and Virginia Baird; his maternal grandparents, Myron (Jake) and Flora Tanari; his aunt and uncle, Rita and Jim Martinkus; and his honorary grandparents, Elaine and Jimmy Orlandi.
