Dewey K. Strine, Jr.YorkDewey K. Strine, Jr., 82, passed away peacefully in his home on Sunday, January 17, 2016. He was a passionate man who enjoyed life and making people laugh. Dewey was the youngest of nine children, born on September 3, 1933, and the son of Mardella (Day) and Dewey K. Strine, Sr. of York, where he lived most of his life. Dewey loved helping others, camping, carpentry, gymnastics and weight lifting. In 1954, Dewey was one of ten drafted into the U.S.
Army from the York area. He completed basic military training in Fort Jackson, S.C. and was assigned to the 4th Infantry Regiment at Ladd Air Force Base, Alaska. Dewey furthered his career by completing Leadership school and Army Intelligence courses in the same year.While stationed in Alaska, he was a member of the Ladd Army Strongmen. During the U.S. Army Weightlifting Tournament at nearby Fort Richardson, Dewey took 1st place in the Middleweight Division and his team surprised the more experienced competitors. During his tour, Bob Hoffman of York brought his team of weightlifters to Alaska to compete against Dewey and his team. Dewey's team won. In addition to weightlifting, he completed a 100-mile cross country skiing event in 1956 over variable Alaskan terrain. After his honorable service, Dewey returned to York in 1958. He continued weightlifting at the YMCA where he captured and held the record for the Dead Lift for many years. He started his own team called "The Strine Weightlifting Club". His team ended the season with three division championships and Dewey took top honors in Division C, ages 21-35. Dewey also joined the Farquhar Park Gymnastic Team.Dewey retired from York International in 1996 after 20 stellar years.Dewey is survived by his wife, Sherry (Walter) Strine, to whom he was married for 42 years; his daughter, Bambi (Strine) Jaskolka; stepson, Scott Fahs; stepdaughter, Mitzi (Fahs) Francis; two sisters, Darthy (Strine) McAfee and Mellie (Strine) Landers; three adoptive children, William Strine, Donna (Strine) Thompson and Kerry (Strine) Strausbaugh; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.A graveside service will be held at Prospect Hill Cemetery (Pennsylvania Avenue entrance), York, with full military honors provided by the York County
Veterans Honor Guard on Friday, January 22, 2016 at 11 am. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the York County S.P.C.A. @
