Dexter Sutherland passed away unexpectedly on December 1, 2016 at age 84. He was born on September 25, 1932 in Rochester, VT to Vinal and Winona Sutherland.Dexter graduated from Rochester High School in 1949 as Valedictorian. In his class of nine, he joked that he WAS the top 10% of the class. Dexter earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Vermont in 1953 and a Master of Science in Mathematics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in 1955. Dexter met Frances in Troy, NY, in 1954 and they married in 1955. After a tour in the US Air Force as an officer stationed at Kirkland AFB, they moved to Los Alamos in 1962, NM. Dexter began work at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL) on the Nuclear Rocket (Rover) Project and retired from the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in 1993 finishing in Atmospheric Chemistry.In retirement, Frances and Dexter spent time traveling the world but always looked forward to returning to see their precious grandchildren. Dexter enjoyed opera, symphony music, bridge, math puzzles, and computers. One of his favorite past times was playing golf. He enjoyed this activity his entire adult life, including the month preceding his death. Another one of his passions was being part of the AARP Tax-Aide program as its local coordinator for many years, a program that provides free income tax preparation at the local Senior Center and surrounding Pueblos.Dexter was preceded in death by his wife Frances (2014) and his sister Sandra Hutchins. He is survived by his daughter Eve Porter (George), son Robert Sutherland (Shelly), grandchildren Landon Sutherland (Liese-Marie), Kelson Sutherland (Bethany), and Allie Sutherland, great grandson Elijah Dexter Sutherland (Landon's son), his sister Norma Canfield and several nieces, nephews and cousins.The family wishes to thank the staff of the Los Alamos Medical Center for the care they provided Dexter and compassion they showed his family.
