Dietrich Martin von Dohlen, 77, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on April 13, 2017, in Campbell, Calif., after a year-long battle with cancer. Dietrich was born on February 18, 1940, in Modesto, Calif. to Louis and Ruth (Janssen) von Dohlen. He grew up in Ceres, Calif., graduating from Ceres High School in 1958. He attended Cal Poly University in San Luis Obispo, where he met his future wife of 52 years, Lanna (Jones). He worked for the Department of Forestry and also as a school bus driver. Dietrich served in the United States Coast Guard from 1962 to 1966, where he was trained as an electrician. He later ran his own electrical contracting business, Von's Service, and then worked for the County of Santa Clara as an electrician and later as a Building Inspector for almost 25 years. For the last 20 years in retirement, Dietrich and Lanna divided their time between their home in Campbell, Calif. and their cattle ranch in Stonyford, Calif. Dietrich was heavily involved with American Youth Hostels, Boy Scouting, the Campbell Little League and IBEW. He was a member of the Building Board of Appeals for the City of Campbell, Calif. and the Volunteer Fire Department in Stonyford, Calif. Dietrich is survived by his wife Lanna; his son Steven (Tricia) and grandchildren Tom, Alex and Bailey of Paso Robles, Calif; his son Jerry of McKinleyville, Calif; his brother Jim (Barbara) of Hughson, Calif; his sister Judy ( Frank) of Stonyford, Calif.; and seven nieces and nephews and their families. A funeral service will be held at Stonyford Cemetery at 11:00 am, Saturday, April 22, 2017, with a reception to follow at the Stonyford Grange Hall. Sign his guestbook at sanluisobispo.com/obituaries
