Alford, Donald A. Sr. HALFMOON Donald A. Alford Sr. of Halfmoon, age 88, died on January 28, 2017, peacefully at home. He was born on June 15, 1928. Don is survived by his wife, Nancy Potter-Alford; his loving daughter, Mick (Maria) Alford-Zappala; his son, Donald (George) Alford Jr.; his sister, Jane Hildebrandt; and his only granddaughter, Michaela Carmela Alford-Zappala, whom he adored. He formed a special bond with Michaela in the short time they were together. Don was proud of his life in Lake Placid where he grew up. He took many trips back to his hometown. He loved boating and one of his prized possessions was a small antique wooden boat, much like the ones he rented when he was a boy. Don loved to read and especially enjoyed Westerns. He studied law at Siena College and later worked at Shenendehowa Central Schools as chief of security, head night cleaner and bus driver. He was very involved in the union and was vice president and chairman of grievances for many years. He was recognized by his co-workers and management as a skilled negotiator and champion for the rights of all union employees. After his retirement, he continued to serve the community delivering Meals on Wheels. Don was an active participant in the Republican Party in the town of Halfmoon. He worked diligently on committees and was proud of the plaque he received for his dedication to the Republican party. Most of all Don was an amazing father and grandfather. Family was the most important to him. He was dearly loved by his family and everyone who met him. He could bring his car to be serviced and the staff there would be his friends for life.
