HOLYOKE - Donald H. ""Don"" Clark, 87, formerly of 68 Oakman Street, Turners Falls, MA, died peacefully on Wednesday morning, November 16, 2016 at the Holyoke Soldiers Home, Holyoke, MA following a period of declining health.A native of Chicopee, MA, he was born on June 26, 1929 to Herbert A. and Hazel (Woodard) Clark. He was educated in Chicopee Public Schools and was a graduate of Chicopee High School in 1946. He graduated from the former Northampton Commercial College in 1951.Donald was a Federal Technician employed by the Massachusetts Army National Guard for 33 years, working in Greenfield, Chicopee, Boston and Natick, MA. He retired from the technician forces in December of 1984. While employed by the Massachusetts Army National Guard, he served in the National Guard retiring in 1989 as Chief Warrant Officer W4. After his retirement, he was recalled several times to work at Fort Devens, (MA) as a consultant in the property book section.Upon his graduation from high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy in July of 1946 and served three years aboard the aircraft carrier USS Saipan. His combined military service totaled 41 years. He was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, Army Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Massachusetts Service Medal and the Massachusetts Emergency Service Ribbon.He was a communicant of Our Lady of Peace Parish in Turners Falls, MA, where he served as a minister of hospitality, usher and collector. Additionally, he was a member of the Turners Falls Knights of Columbus, Montague Lodge of Elks BPOE #2521, the American Legion, Turners Falls Athletic Club, the 104th Infantry Retiree's Association and was a life member of the National Guard Association of the United States and Massachusetts.Donald enjoyed playing golf and was a member of Thomas Memorial Golf and Country Club in Turners Falls, MA. He played semi-pro football for the former Greenfield Lion's for four years. He enjoyed traveling and did so extensively with his wife, family and friends throughout the United States.His wife of 48 years, the former Lois M. Guilbault, predeceased him on December 10, 2001. They were married on May 9, 1953 in the former St. Mary's of the Assumption Church in Turners Falls, MA. He is survived by his daughters: Donalyn J. Minkiewicz of Stillwater, PA and Catherine ""Kitty"" Mathers and her husband Mark of Haydenville, MA, and grandson Daniel Cole. Additionally, Don is lovingly remembered by his devoted companion Grace Dwight of Whately, MA and her family.A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be observed on Monday, November 21, 2016 from Our Lady of Peace Church, 90 Seventh Street, Turners Falls, MA at 10 a.m., with Rev. Fr. Stanley J. Aksamit, Pastor, as the celebrant. Rites of committal and burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Turners Falls, MA. Full military honors will be observed, with a detachment of the 54th Massachusetts Army National Guard in attendance.Guests are invited to convene directly at the church on Monday morning in observance of the services.Visiting hours will be observed on Sunday, November 20, 2016 at the McCarthy Funeral Homes, 14 Prospect Street, Turners Falls, MA from 5 until 7 p.m.Flowers are respectfully requested to be omitted, with expressions of affection in the form of a charitable contribution in Donald's memory preferred to the Joslin Diabetes Foundation, 1 Joslin Place, Boston, MA 02215 or the Town of Montague Veteran's Memorial Fund, 1 Avenue A, Turners Falls, MA 01376.The McCarthy Funeral Homes of Greenfield and Turners Falls, MA, have been entrusted with the arrangements.
