August 30, 1928 - July 14, 2016Well-known Eugene resident and beloved family physician, Dr. Donald Hill, passed away on July 14th at the age of 87. Don was born on August 30th, 1928 in Detroit, Michigan. His family moved to Des Moines Iowa, where he and his younger brother lived an idyllic childhood. During this time Don became a very good piano player, practicing his skills at their local church on Sundays. He became very proficient at the "ragtime" style and his favorite composer, Scott Joplin. After college at Drake University in 1949, he decided to go into pre-med at U of Iowa, and furthered his studies at Suburban Hospital in Washington D.C. It was there that he met the "love of his life" Kathleen Schaeffer, an X-Ray Technician in the Radiology Department. Don and Kathy spent more and more time together, and they married in December of 1952. At this point Don and Kathy decided to move to the west coast, where Don took a position at Sacred Heart Hospital in their new intern program. They both "fell in love" with the beauty and appeal of Oregon. So after a two year enlistment as a flight surgeon in the Air Force, they came back to Eugene to establish permanent roots in Eugene. They opened a practice on 18th Avenue, one of the only doctor's offices on the south side of town. In 1962 a brand new office was built at 24th and Willamette. Don was an active member of the Eugene Medical Society and awarded the Presidential Citation for his work in the field of medical history. He was a past president of the Lane County General Practice Association, member of both the American and Oregon Academy of General Practice, and an avid golfer and member of Eugene Country Club. Later in his career he volunteered at the Dexter Clinic, as the primary doctor on call. Don maintained friendly relationships with all his patients through the years. Don brought over 3,500 babies into the world, and very often he would deliver the offspring of their children and grandchildren. Don was also a lifetime "Ducks" fan. Whether it was football, basketball or track, Don always participated, cheered on, and gave support to his precious "Ducks". Most importantly, Don, was a wonderful father, husband and friend. His contributions to the community and caring for his patients over the years left an undeniable impact to those that knew him. He will be sorely missed. Don was preceded in death by first wife, Kathleen Schaeffer, and second wife, Flora Hansen. He is survived by brother, Richard Hill; children: Renee Houston, Randy Hill, and Linda Roberts; and grandchildren: Amy Abrams, Taylor Hill, Jennifer Roberts and Jamie Roberts.
