Donald James Simmons was born on June 25th 1950 in Summerton, South Carolina. When he was three years old his family relocated to Philadelphia Pennsylvania.
He was educated in the Philadelphia public school system and after graduating from Overbrook High School in 1967, he attended Electronics Training Center where he graduated with honors in 1969.
As a child he studied the bible along with his family and was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses on March 9th, 1968. Donald had the privilege of being at Yankee Stadium, NYC when Brother Harold King addressed a large crowd with his experiences following his release from a Chinese Prison.
Donald was the only boy in a family of girls and served both as foil and hero for his sisters. He would joke and tease while being loving and protective, and his siblings have many warm and humorous memories of him that they will always hold dear.
Donald was well known for generous nature, and had the reputation of one who would truly "give you the shirt off his back". He was also well known for his love and knowledge of music. He had an extensive vinyl record collection and for a short time even hosted an oldies show on a local radio station. He had a love for learning and taught himself Spanish. Donald was a whiz at the game show Jeopardy and each week completed the New York Times Sunday crossword puzzle.
In 2001 Donald suffered traumatic brain injury, and spent the rest of his life in nursing home care. At the time of his accident, he was finishing up a course in paralegal studies, graduating with honors, and had been recommended for a scholarship to Temple University's law school. More importantly, however, he was once again studying the bible in an effort to reestablish his relationship with Jehovah God.
Donald never married or had children of his own, but he had a special bond with his nieces and nephews and they all have lasting memories they will cherish.
Preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy M. Simmons, he leaves to mourn his passing his father James A. Simmons, six sisters, Roberta Pankey, Etta White (Ray), Lorraine McDowell (Eric), Stephanie White (Charles), Jessica Madry (Greg), and Jennifer Simmons.
Also, nieces and nephews: Alexis, Raymond, Courtney, David, Melissa, Morgan, Justin, Rebecca, Gillian, Jared, Andrew; additionally, he will be missed dearly by a host of family and friends.
The Family would like to express our deepest gratitude for the loving support of all of Donald's caregivers and the many friends who took the time to visit him during his lengthy illness. Our appreciation cannot be overstated for all the kindness shown. Thank you.
Sorrowfully,
The Family
