Donald Jerome "Don" Hermanage 87, of Indianapolis, passed away on August 31, 2017 at Castleton Healthcare Center. He was born on September 21, 1929 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the youngest of two children, born to the late Clifford and Katharine (Knop) Herman.Don grew up during the depression, worked multiple farms in New York as part of a tenant farming family, lost his father at an early age, then attended Tonawanda High School in North Collins, New York before finishing high school at Flint Northern High in Flint, Michigan.Don attended Flint Jr. College (Associate of Arts degree) and the University of Michigan (Bachelor degree in Business Administration) before serving in the Army Counter Intelligence Corps (CIC) in Washington, DC (1951-1953) during the Korean War.He started working for National China Equipment Corp. in Marion, Indiana in 1953 and married the love of his life, Patricia Shildmyer on April 24, 1954. Pat preceded him in death on November 16, 2012. Don and Pat moved to Indianapolis, Indiana in 1956 where he continued working for National China.  Don next worked for CFS Continental and then retired from Sysco in 1993 after a 37 year career in the restaurant business.Don was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church and participated in the Canoe Crowd, Choir, Softball, Bowling, and Golf leagues and served on local school boards.  He volunteered at Connor Prairie and at the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry.After retirement, Don and Pat enjoyed traveling to Bed & Breakfasts in New England, Arizona, Lake Tahoe and California. Dad's favorite thing was spending time with his children, grandchildren and nieces and nephews.Don is survived by five children: Steve (Pam) Herman, Jim (Kellie) Herman, Dan Herman, Tom (Sandy) Herman, Kathleen (Rick) Davis; 13 grandchildren (Chrissy, Heather, Madison, Eric, Justin, Zachary, Taylor, Andrew, Nicole, Rick Jr., Sara, Mahalia and Cienna), 8 great grandchildren (Arianna, Julianna, Drake, Tripp, Geo, Arlo, Ryker and Corbin) and 11 nephews and nieces.Friends and family will gather for visitation Tuesday, September 5, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at Flanner and Buchanan - Oaklawn Memorial Gardens (Connor Suite), 9700 Allisonville Road, Indianapolis.A 10:30 a.m. mass will be held Wednesday, September 6 at St. Matthews Catholic Church, 4100 East 56th Street, Indianapolis, with burial following at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society Food Pantry, 3001 30th Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46218.Friends may sign Don's online guest registry at www.flannerbuchanan.com
