Donald "Mac" McPhersonDon McPherson passed away on Friday, September 20, 2013, in Spokane, Washington, at the age of 84.The oldest of six children, Don, a 9 ½ pound baby boy, was born on March 23, 1929 to Donald and Mae McPherson in Yakima, Washington.At the age of 16 Don decided to join the U.S. Marines; he went on to serve in China during World War II. Upon his honorable discharge from the Marines in 1948, he returned to his hometown of Ellensburg, Washington.On December 9, 1950, Don married Kay Virginia Hayes, who would be the love of his life. Within the first eight years of their marriage they welcomed three children: Dale, Karen and Chris.From the Roslyn coal mines to a career with the Ellensburg City Light Department, Don always valued hard work. Upon his retirement he ventured out, starting several businesses, including Aerodyne Fire Safety Equipment Sales, farming, and a tractor restoration business.Don also valued the importance of community involvement. He served as Jaycees Vice President; Jaycees Senator; Kittitas County Campfire Board Chairman; Junior Chamber of Commerce member; Toastmasters member; President of the Kittitas County Snowmobile Club; Little League coach; Indian Guides Club leader; a 4th degree Grand Knight; Early Iron Club member; and Junior Rodeo Posse board member. Don received many awards and honors for his involvement in these organizations.Don never met a stranger. He felt richly blessed by his family and his innumerable lasting friendships. When Don found time for indulgence in recreational hobbies he enjoyed drinks with friends, dancing, traveling, playing tennis, golfing, flying RC airplanes, fishing and playing cards. In May of this year Don was recognized as a WWII survivor for his sacrifice and achievement. He was invited to and participated in the Inland Northwest Honor Flight to Washington D.C. This was a source of great pride for him.Don led a full life and ended it by saying "It's been quite a ride but I stayed on and I rode it to the end."Don is preceded in death by his wife, Kay; siblings Bette, Joyce and Patricia; and grandson Jarrod;. He is survived by his brother Duncan and sister, Billie Lou. Don also leaves behind his three beloved children; Dale (Deborah) McPherson, Karen (Joseph) Druffel, and Chris (Thim) McPherson; 9 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Celebration of life will be held on Monday, September 30, at St. Andrew's Catholic Church at 401 South Willow Street in Ellensburg, Washington, with a funeral mass at 11 a.m., preceded by a 10 a.m. rosary. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Inland Northwest Honor Flight program at 608 West 2nd Avenue, Ste. 309, Spokane, Washington, 99201.
