Donald Robert MorrisonAGE: 89 • WilmingtonDonald Robert Morrison passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 17,2017, at home in Wilmington Delaware. He was 89 years of age and residing at Forward Manor, Independent Living, with his loving wife of 63 years Cassie by his side.Don was born on June 24, 1928, in Westwood, California. He served in the Army during the Korean War in 1951-1952. On January 30th 1954 he married Catherine T. Lynch at Saint John's Church of the Long Green Valley, Baldwin Maryland. She was the love of his life. As a youth, Don enjoyed playing beach volleyball in Santa Monica, CA and also played Varsity baseball at University High School. He played third base, which he liked to call "the hot corner" and when Don threw you could really feel the sting when it hit the glove. He went on and played college baseball at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) where he graduated with a Chemical Engineering degree. After completing college, he was stationed at the Army Chemical Center in Edgewood Maryland. Following service to his country, Don became a Chemical Engineer for ICI Americas (formerly Atlas Powder Company) from which he retired after 33 years of employment. Memberships included American Institute of Chemical Engineers and Caltech Alumni Association. He was also a faithful member of Church of the Holy Child.Don enjoyed being active with his sons in competitive swimming. He spent many years volunteering as an announcer, starter, stroke and turn judge and timer at the Wilmington Aquatic Club and the North Brandywine Swim League, of which he is a past president. He enjoyed coaching little league baseball and was involved with Indian Guides as well as many other outdoor activities. Don was an avid supporter of his kids' interests and never missed going to their events whenever possible. Aside from enjoying time with his family he was a talented golfer, being taught the game by his Scottish father Malcolm at a young age. He had a lifelong curiosity about fixing and improving things and conservation came naturally to him. After his retirement from ICI, he was able to travel with Cassie and visit his boys and their families living in Ventura, CA. They traveled to Europe and enjoyed numerous other vacations together. Later he and Cassie moved to Carillon Crossing where he became president of the resident's association. He played golf with a regular group up until about 4 years ago and was very happy to have scored two holes in one (aces). Don was also an active member of the Jewish Community Center, where he enjoyed swimming and other sports. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Catherine Lynch Morrison, three sons Gregory Allen (Mary Ellen) of Newark, DE, Barry Malcolm (Christina), and Charles Michael (LaDene) of Ventura, CA, 10 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren.
